rimfire it is then- Savage MkII? or are there some others I should look into? I know that Marlin has stopped making the 925 and will be replacing it with another...
Old CIL-Anschutz can be found at gunshows for almost give away pricing. Some of these have true match actions that costs over a thousand(s) to buy now.
There is a huge range of quality rimfires from the 50's to 80's when precision rimfire was popular.
Today, I only have experience with BRNO/CZ, Savage and tuned 10/22's. Anschutz are always gems but pricey. Other match brands like Walther will be way above your budget. Some Norincos are BRNO knock offs and work very well.
The Brunos are great shooters and an older #4 is plain looking but man, some can shoot superbly. Again, usually dirt cheap. new CZ are more money then I would want to spend.
I bought the new Savage MkII cause I wanted something quick and I was in WSS and the price was stupidly low. I am floored by how well this rifle shoots. With SK rifle match, it is truly sub MOA out to 200yds and at 100yds 5rds 5/8" groups are not uncommon. Maybe the once in a lifetime rifle but I am not asking questions. Trigger can be tuned to be nice and light too.
10/22's are fun, I love them and own several. But they are more blasting then precision so would suggest you stay away for now. yes, they can be made to shoot bugholes too but bring $$$$$$
If luck is on your side and you get another Savage like mine, you'll have a superb shooter for peanuts. This will still leave you room to test some ammo and you will need some $$ to get enough to test.
Also, room to buy quality optics.
If you are only looking at 50yds, then go straight to the Blasers, and various bulk HV stuff you can find. Some will shoot great at short range.
If the goal is to shoot further, then you will need to expand your search to include match ammo from Eley, SK, and RWS. CCI stuff is also good but not common in my area anymore. The CCI stand velocity can work really well and is usually less money then the Euro brands.
No matter what, get out there and SHOOOOOT. Precision shooters are those who can dope conditions so that their rifle can perform to its best ability.
There is only one way to learn how to dope the air
Enjoy your journey.
