Just bough a Rem 700 SPS in RUM with a 4200 6-24 and took it to the range. I'm shooting 165 gr with 81 gr IMR 7828. Not impressed with the accuracy...probably 1 inch groups at 100 yds. I will be playing around with the loads...anyone have recomendations? I have seen 3 through the same whole with a RUM but it was a sendero ..... What can I expect from mine? I don't want to piss around with loads for weeks to try and get closer than I should be. Will it be a tack driver if I mess around with it?

if a bone stock sps gave me 1 inch accuracy i would be happy. adjust the trigger and tune your load a bit and you may have a sub minute rifle. pretty good for an off the rack economy rifle.

"...in RUM..." Which one? There are several.
"...seen 3 through the same hole..." Find out what the load was and work up a load with that powder, primer and bullet. The exact same load won't shoot the same way in any other rifle though.
Mucking about with the load is normal. An inch at 100 with a stock rifle isn't anything to be ashamed of, but try a different powder and bullet style of the same weight. Try some IMR4350 and work up the load. 78.0 to 83.0 for a 165 grain bullet.

3 through one hole, not asking much from an economy rifle  Almost like the guy driving a chevette wondering why it doesnt do the quarter mile like his buddies Lamborghini.

Cheers!!

One inch groups with a stock rifle having tried only one load,is actually quite good.Trying other loads may certainly result in better accuracy, but if you demand one hole groups, you may need to look at accurizing the rifle and possibly even rebarreling with a premium grade barrel.

My own 300 ultramags did much better than one inch, but they certainly weren't stock SPS rifles.

It's a 300 RUM. And I am using the same loads that my buddy was hitting the same hole 3x with. I think I have some 4350....Everyone at the range(It was stupid busy) seemed to be impressed but me. So if you all say that's good from a cheaper rifle, then good. I won't muck around too much. I geuss my next one will be a sindero.

Don't expect all sendero's to shoot 1/2" either. Some do,but some don't.If you demand top notch accuracy, the most likely way to get it is buy having a rifle built with premium components.

below are three consecutive groups fired with one of my 300ultramags while developing loads. The rifle is built on a lapped and trued 700 action, with a Gaillard barrel, and a mcmillan stock.

You could spend about an hour giving the rifle 'the usual' basic treatment for a Remington:

Tune the trigger, free float the bbl and glass bed the action. Then see what the groups do.

Gophers are pretty cool with an ultra mag.

Unfortunately with a normal barrel life of 1500 rounds or less for the 300ultramag(much less if you overheat the barrel),and a fairly high cost in bullets and powder(compared to normal varmint cartridges),that makes for pretty expensive gopher shooting.

How do you like your SPS ? Recoil ? Feel ? Feeding ? Accuracy sounds very good for just starting out with it.

I have a sendero 300 RUM, but have been thinking of picking up an SPS in 300RUM as a "some-day custom."

Yea but it's totally worth it. I will only use it when I'm not on my quad. I have a stevens 22-250 for the front of my quad. And as far as the SPS I love it....less recoil than a 12 ga with a 3 inch. I don't know how it feeds. Just one shot at a time at the range.

someone said it already, one load that shoots good out of one gun won't shoot the same out of the other, even the same model so once you pick the bullet you want bring a combination of different loads/powders shoot and compare. i shoot reloader 22 out of my RUM and it likes it. didn't like the other powders as much for some reason. i am not a reloading or shooting expert but have my "expert" buddy work out the loads and this is what he had me do until we found the best. regardless, anything under an 1" is good to me out of a stock gun.

One inch with the first load you try is good. Stoke that sucker up to full or at least semi full power and I bet it gets better. A lot of high pressure rounds shoot best near max. Your load is pretty mild.

So I used the same powder bullets and primers but went from 81 up. Loaded 5 at 86, 5 at 91 and 5 at 95 (Max is 97.7) Got 2 in the same hole and the third nearly touching at 100 with the 86, and 3 pretty close (3/4 inch) with the 91 ans d a little spaced at 95 grains. Next weekend 3 each at 85, 86, 87, 88, 89 and take it from there. How do I post pics on here?
