What kind of Mauser is best for just a shooter?

I really don't care about collectability, I am just looking for a decent looking Mauser for a decent price. Seems like the Yugos might be the way to go.

Can anyone give some suggestions on what to get, and more importantly, what to AVOID?

The 24/47's were really nice. I'm partial to the elm stocks.....the 48's are nice but the stocks have zero character.

My First rifle was a M96 Swede and Ive loved it ever since.. Its one of my best shooters and you cant go wrong with the 6.5x55 pill. As its been said, Great accuracy and little kick. Also the action on them is butter smooth haha.

Though if your going for optics (I personally like the original sights) find one thats already been drilled/tapped as there are many of those out there (or get optics that go in the original sight mount.)

I dont have a Yugo mauser so I cant really say...
 
Another vote for a Swede. I have a 96 and a 38 and I love the Model 96.

It is the Swedist thing to shoot.
 
i love my yugo refurb, but 8mm isnt easy to find, id say buy a RC k98k in 8mm for the "original" experience, of an israeli conversion for a frquent shooter
 
My spanish Fr8 is a nice shooting nice handling rifle if you like the 98 action, and the .308 is much easier to come by than 8mm anymore...., if not it than a short swede in 6.5
 
what would you expect to pay for a bubba'd Mauser,be it Israeli,Yugo,or Argentine?I'm not a purist or into collecting,just looking for shooters

as low as 100, on up, depending on condition. My FR8 was 175, was out of money at the last show, where there was a long swede for the same price (in great condition too! and I was broke, <SOB>
 
I suppose its due to supply, but a typical ''sporterized ''303 goes for around $100, give or take $25.The other mausers seem to fetch higher prices
