What kind of scope is good enough for hunting with SKS?

I haven't hit any animal with soft point yet, but I believe that i can shoot rapidly 5 times with SKS, right? I don't think any animal can survive and ran far away with 5 soft point bullets in the torso, not even with 1 or 2. Full grown grizzly bear is another story.

PS: I didn't shoot any animal with FMJ neither.

Awesome, my favorite post ever on CGN.

OK, a quick hunting lesson here. As you start hunting you will notice that most of the time, no matter what type of gun you shoot, there is only time for one well placed shot. Hitting a running animal is not that feasable for a first timer, or even many people who have been doing it for years. Concentrate on your first shot in practice, because it's likely the only one that will count in the field. Work on that instead of spraying bullets as fast as you can. Or prepare for the CGNers to toss you into the flames.
As for scopes on the SKS, the only thing I've seen working well is a side mount which needs to be drilled and tapped. A lot of dust cover mounts get tossed away.

hmm lemme guess......COD fan perhaps?

and then this:

"By the way, is it legal for SKS to target shooting/transporting/hunting with a bayonet on it?"

I wish I had the palm face emoticon now.....

To the OP, drill/tap a side mount is pretty much the only reliable way to mount and hold zero.

My son-in-law shot 2 deer from his stand with an SKS.
Althought I may not agree with it, he did it right.

- Used proper hunting rounds.
- Practised with the ammo he was going to use.
- Kept distance to an absolute minimum.
- Was VERY comfortable with the shot.

How do I know all this? I was sitting right beside him (I dont hunt).
Do I agree with it now ? it's not important what I think.
Just do it right, listen to others with experience, dont re-invent the wheel, and delete my response.

I am not a big fan of optics on the SKS. It comes with iron sights that are actually pretty good. A buddy and I shoot at 100 yards and have real nice patterns. We also shoot silhouette out to 400 meters (turkeys) and with practice, we are pretty good at hitting them with surplus ammo, we got past 50% and achieved 70% but would like to have 80% or 4 shots out of 5 hitting the turkeys :)

Having hunted moose with a 30-30 in my teenage years, I would have no problem hunting with the SKS as long as the hunt is kept within the scope of what the firearm is capable. Some people around where I live consider it bad form to hunt with the SKS as its too inaccurate all the while hunting themselves with a Browning BAR in 338 Winchester but not being able to achieve good accuracy due to buck fever, keep upping the caliber instead of practicing shot placement.......................

a) Scoping a battle rifle is blasphemy
b) Trying to shoot deer or bear at 200 yards with an SKS is asinine
c) Trying to kill deer or bear at 200 yards with 7.62x39 is irresponsible
d) You are definitely not a regular hunter. You may well be a jackass.

Actually...

The "Hoo-Eee" is strong with this one.

OP, don't listen to anyone that tells you you shouldn't hunt with an SKS. Anyone who talks crap about the gun just can't shoot with irons.

I would not hesitate to use mine within a reasonable distance like 100y, and with practice you can hit an 8 inch target easily with those iron sights.

If you really want to mount optics, get a Bushnell TRS1 red dot, and a BC Tactical Scout Mount. This setup is by far the most reliable, and easy to use setup out there.

Mounting an actual scope on an SKS is a waste of time. There is issues with proper cheek weld, and shell deflection, and returning to zero after disassembly that make it a serious pain in the ass.

........oh boy

I didn't say not to hunt with an sks, like many have posted, it's the distance that people will get upset with.
100yds and less, stick with irons and your fine!
