when I was young I had an old trapper teach me how to field dress an animal
he was a true bush woodsman
since then I have used one of two knives now for 45 years
a g96 buck knife and a smith and Wesson bowie knife
the smith and Wesson bowie knife has a 14 inch blade
I use that for mainly skinning moose and elk
I use the full length of the blade while skinning
5 or six full length swipes I'm done one side flip the carcass over,
same thing
the buck knife I use for splitting briskets and pelvic bones on deer and starting the hide on moose or elk
45 years and this two knife system has never failed me,
many people that have been with me and witnessed my method just stand back and scratch their heads in awe
cant stand those little short blade glorified pocket knife things they call hunting knives, that use little tiny cuts, they are mainly built to cut deep gashes
in yer hands and fingers
to me those are for little kids
that still like to whittle on sticks and play with themselves
