What leather and scope would you put on a Marlin 336SS?

Hey everyone

I picked up a beautiful Marlin 336SS 30-30 lever a few months ago.

I am looking up options for scopes and leather products for the rifle and I figured lets see what others have added to this amazing looking rifle.

I would prefer to keep any options in keeping with the looks and lines of the rifle. If you have pics of your setup then I'd love to see them.[/IMG]
A VX2 1x4 scope in low weaver mounts on a 1pc base would be perfect for sighting as would a plain 1" leather sling in order to keep the weight to a minimum.

The Remington pumps with irons are lean around the action bars and seem to carry well.
^^x2!^^ .... A 7600 with receiver sight will carry as well as any lever esp if it's a carbine or have the bbl cut back to 20". The added bonus over a lever are cartridges offering much more power and better bullet selection and performance.

The FXII 2.5X doesn't come in silver I think, if that is an issue. The 5" of eye relief suited my 444 well. I sure like the 1-4X versions I test at stores. I had a Redfield mounted on a 243 BLR years ago. Worked like a charm for deer in southern Sask.. I'm considering a 2-7X for my first bolt in many years, 223. I find the 4X about my limit of sight picture shake off hand. A 4X fixed would also grace that Marlin real nice.

Just noticed the rifle is a JM, nice score indeed.

The new receiver sights like the Skinner are dandy and sleek. If mounting a receiver sight today they would be considered. My receiver sights were mounted decades ago. I did once mount a Williams FP on a lefty Rem 700 many years ago. It was a little fatter in the hand but the wood stock was warmer in colder weather. Slapped me silly with its optic friendly stock!!

I would still pick a BLR over a pump, based on pure lever prejudice only, if higher performance spitzers and pressures were wanted. Pumps are fine actions and fast repeaters that don't disturb the trigger hand like most other actions.

I used a 2.5x20mm at the range and was surprised to see that my groups didn't open up much compared to a 12 - 16x at 50 m. Also managed to hit an ~8" 200 m gong a few times offhand with a .22 LR and 2.5x scope - trajectory limited hits, not optical power. The rimfire's owner nailed that plate nearly every time. So I think low magnification is a lot less limiting than commonly perceived. A lever with the 2.5x20mm mounted very low and forward is a pretty good setup.

Also, I guess I'm not much of a lever person after all. I found that the drop at comb and short receiver length weren't really conducive to scope mounting, that stock options were non-existent, and that shoving cartridges through the loading gate left me with few options if the rifle jammed unless I was carrying a screwdriver around. Over time I wound up wandering back to bolt actions with floorplates for easy field stripping, easy cleaning and easy scope mounting. I wound up selling both my 9422s, my 336SS and my Guide Gun. My BARs are going too. Perhaps one day I'll regret selling off the harder-to-get stuff, but I like the notion of owning just a few bolt and pump actions in a few cartridges that suit me better. Keeps it simpler. More practice on less stuff. I think, for me, that a .30-06 Featherweight in a McMillan with a 4x33mm would handle most duties with durability and finesse at the same weight.

So whether lever or bolt, I like smaller scopes that suit a given rifle's handling characteristics. I'd like to put irons on it too - maybe the QD Talley bases with the peep sight and a barrel band front.

Where pumps are concerned, the 7600 mounts, operates and points a lot like an 870. So practice at skeet and sporting clays feeds back into rifle proficiency. Again, just personal preference but I like the commonality. Good thing everyone has different tastes, or it would be a boring world.

some excellent suggestions in this thread. I have lots to think about now. I definitely think a silver coloured scope will match the rifle well.

I have a friend who makes leather products. I will find a sling design that works for me and get him to make me a custom one that matches the wood colour of the stock.

Lever guns are by far the best looking rifles around.

One thing about silver scopes...

We mounted a Leupold one on my son-in-law's Tikka T3 Stainless. Out in the woods, the scope definitely stands out a lot more than the rifle.

Matte black always looks good on a stainless rifle.

FWIW.
