What length 870 rifled barrels are you guys using ?

Seems most are running shorter rifled barrels vs smooth bore for hunting.

Wanting to pick one up for Sabots and put a See-All sight on it but not sure which length to choose.

Not hunting yet, but I was throwing some slugs down range getting ready for Nov 7th.

20 inch rifled for deer season, 28 inch smooth for birds. I used to use the 28 with rifled slugs for deer.

I like the shorter length and maneuverability much more.

Thanks for the insight on your experiences verminaard. Have been coming to the same conclusion the shorter versions are more useful.

Thinking of picking up a 20" rifled and a 23 or 26" smooth bore since my 870 barrels are all either 18", 14" and 12".

Buy yourself a rifled sabot choke and you're golden. Sabot slugs in my smooth bore 18" barrel are very accurate with the rifled choke, though I don't use slugs for hunting, or my 870 at all aside from duck and geese.

I doubt the 'rifling' on a Forster slug results in anywhere near the rotations or accuracy imparted by either a rifled barrel or rifled choke. If it were me the rifled choke is the way to go for slugs and can then be changed out for use of a normal choke with shot.

Hummmm....... now the rifled choke option is something I hadn't really considered.

Wonder what barrel length might be considered as ideal for that ?

Yeah, I am going to have to do some research on that.

Though I suspect the rifled choke would give a similar effect as a rifled barrel when using bird shot. It just might not be as pronounced.

Recall doing some reading somewhere on rifled chokes with bird/buckshot and it wasn't good.

I'd only consider it for slugs.

I have been using my "tactical" 887 with very short barrel for deer. This year, it will be a smooth 20" on a Wingmaster for the stand, and the 887 for the bush push due the short length and durability.

Mark Mags,

I'm only seeing the 887 with 28" barrels. Is this the length yours has or is it shorter ?
