What lever 22 would you recommend - Marlin or Browning?

Older, pre-1990 39a is the way to go. If you insist on buying new a browning might be worth considering. The Henry frontier octagon barrel is nice too...
 
Got my S-I-L a Henry lever .22 and he loves it. My lever is a minty 1978 9422M. Shot a few Brownings and they are nice too. No experiance with the Marlins, but they are highly recommended by those who have them. My advise is to try out different manufacturers and see what your personal preferance is as you may be pleasantly surprised.
 
Can't speak for the Marlin but do have a Browning lever in .22 and it has been a very reliable, accurate little rifle in our family for many years. Has killed a lot of small game without a hitch. Has also plinked it's way through many a box of .22's; all brands, all types without a hitch. :D
 
Marlin owner here.
Just for one year so far, so not much experience to talk about, but keep in mind that it's a full size rifle, made out of steel.
Mine is reliable and accurate.
Browning is on the smaller side for sure.

I'll make this quick...have both....each has their good and bad...given only one choice...I'd go with Browning.

I find the 39A to be a bit too heavy for all day shooting, action a bit rough and longer....and the 24" barrel is just too long.
 
Each have their positive points. I have all the lever actions... Browning, Win.9422, Marlins and the Erma-Werke which the Henry is patterned after. The 39A has the long 24" barrel whereas the others have the 20" barrels. If you wish to have the 20" barrel in the Marlin line then check out the Marlin Mountie.
 
I've got an older Marlin 39A and I absolutely love it. Truly impressive quality and accuracy, and it flawlessly feeds anything you want to load into it. Until I tried this rifle I actually had a dislike for lever actions, for reasons unknown, but this fine firearm changed my mind about all that.

I cannot speak for the other makes or models, however.
 
You really should try to handle both rifles if possible . The fit and feel are completely different . They are both well made , but the Marlin is larger and heavier . Keep an eye on quality control on the new Marlins though . Older ones are out there for sale .
 
Can't say anything for both, but I was wondering similar things.. Marlin looked really nice, but it was out of my price range..
I picked up a Henry .22 Frontier with the Octagon barrel and brass front sight and I love it, smooth action, accurate out of the box, and very easy to take apart and clean.
