I want to get a lever gun for hunting here in NS and NL. got three questions up for bashing;

what gun, I can get a 464 with 10 shots fired for the same price i can get a pre 64 94. for a little more i can get 1955 335 SC in 35 rem?

30/30 or 35, I could use the extra punch of the 35 in NL this fall but want the better performer, keep in mind i will be shooting leverloution?

optics, i want open sights and see a lot of people have scopes mounted. I figure for the type of gun, types of terrain it will be used in and the effective range that a scope isn’t really necessary?

Personally I would take either the 94 or the 336 in 35 rem. Both are proven rifles made when quality and workmanship counted. The 35 may give you a little more punch for the bigger stuff. I prefer a peep sight on my levers of that style, but a low power on the Marlin also looks right at home.

I would take the .35 Remington without giving it a second thought.

You may also want to consider one of the new Winchester 1886 Extra Lightweight Rifles in .45-70. Ellwood Epps has them for sale and they are awesome!

Yes guys, I have thought of the big cal's like a guide gun in 45-70 or even a .44 as i wouldnt mind getting a .44 revolver. will probably get into loading.

Are the big cals that much better/nessary? I know they hit harder but.... where we hunt and how we hunt allows us to get up close and personal to moose frequently and know a .35 will do the trick. if there were rifles in those cals around here for sale i would entertain the idea.
they must kick like a mule?

again, I am open to sugjestions and feedback!! and who uses scopes and who uses open sights....what ya think?

Hey bro, do me a favour an buy a .375 Win an use it an use it an share the love on these forums!
im a huge fan, bein my first lever, a win 94 in the cal.... so many wasted shots, so many misses but a few sweet sweet trophys... i love it but just having a hard time with it, but this is the big gurls year!

Williams peep sights an my accuracy doubled ASAP.

plenty of punch in a 375win!

just throwing it out there

"so many wasted shots, so many misses but a few sweet sweet trophys"...
"wasted shots" and "misses" is not realy what I want to hear about a cal or gun I am looking at. I imagine the .375 does pack some punch

I'd suggest a .356 Winchester, as it has more punch than either a .35 Rem or .375 Win. The Winchester Big Bores are nice, and can take either a scope or peep sight. You can occasionally find the Marlin 336ER in .356, and this would be a great rifle for your application. Very accurate and you can clean it from the chamber end , unlike the Winchester 94. No LeverEvolution ammo is available for it, but the Winchester factory load out performs the Hornady .35 Rem load. It really is a handloaders carridge, but if you are going to get in to it, it's a great caliber, and brass is available.

Good luck

The 375 in nice. I can't argue that. I still want to get my hands on one, one day.

If i were you though boreal boy, i'd go for the 35 Remington. I'd give up a kidney before i'd sell my'n. Very nice rifles.

I hope you never get "buck fever" or use ####ty open sights, factory sights dont do it for me, since usin the williams peep its been awesome.

i dont reload, hence the wasted shots.. shootin paper n ####

its guna do anythin a 30-30 will but with a bit more wallop.

Awesome info guys, Thanks!!!! keep it coming. you give me a lot to think about.
where i sit now is for local guns for sale i will grad that .35 336SC. but, if i ever get access to equipment exchange I may find some bigger cals for sale on there....
thanks again for the differnt views and reviews!
william peep sights sounds like a plan! on what ever i get.
the .35 is drilled with a rail and scope mounted and front sight removed, is it any issue to have the rail removed, holes filled and install williams sights...? show stopper....?

I have a pair of 336s in 30/30. Great guns. I use a bushnell banner 1-4x40 on both, because I am not very good with open sights.
I have an 1895 GG in 45/70. If you reload you can tame the recoil. Remember, with the bigger bullets you don't need max speed. I run mine at about 1400 fps with a 405 cast bullet.
For moose, I think I would prefer to have the 45/70 with me.

this is the 1955 336SC in .35 rem

How much of an issue is the rise and drop of the larger cal rounds, is it that drastic up to 100 yards compared to the lighter lever cals?

boreal Boy, I looked pretty hard at that Marlin and thought it looked pretty nice.
In one of the pics, it looks like it still has the srew holes for the front sight.
An older ramp style, with two screws to hold it on, would take no effort to install.
$89 for a William's FP-94/36 peep sight, and you would have the perfect rig
for making snap shots.
You don't even have to fill in the screw holes from the scope mount if you don't
want to.

thanks Rory I am jusst waiting for a reply back from the seller.
when your talking about the williams peeps is it just the front or front and rear sights?

I fired a friends Browning .325 wsm and Browning lever 300 wm,both beautiful rifles, he also uses em in NS/NL for moose and bear.

A fire sight in front (fiber optic) and a williams peep sight in the back. It is in a league of it's own when talking about open sights!

I'll put in another vote for the 375 Winchester. Hornady is adding it to their Leverevolution line.

Try the Marlin out first. Especialy if you like the feel of the Winchester. I find the Marlin does not fit me like a Winchester does.

Oh ya I forgot to add 30 30 is such a boring but effective round! And the pre 64 M94... So nice and balanced it just feels right when you bring it to your shoulder.
