What magnification are you using on your .204 ruger?

You are definitely on the right track. I own several leupolds, but recently bought my first sightron. I am very impressed with the sightron and feel it is more bang for my buck. If you have to make a financial decision to choose between better quality glass and higher magnification, choose the better glass. You will likely be happier with a stellar 3-9x than a so-so 4-14x. I have a 6-24 4200 bushnell on mine. Lots of magnification, maybe a little bit heavy and physically large though. Overall I love it! You can sight it in without having to wonder where it hit because you can see the hole at 100 yds very easily.

I can afford the leupolds and other expensive scopes but i won't buy Leupold at Canadian prices because it is a rip off.I also don't believe you need to shell out big money for a coyote hunting scope.I don't shoot bench rest so i think i should be able to find a suitable scope under $600 for the purpose.Thanks for the vote for sightron.I've been reading reviews on a lot of glass over the past few weeks on varmint scopes priced as high as $1500 and it certainly seems that all that glitter's isn't gold in most cases.
 
Sightron is a great value for around one K but for that same K, i think the Zeiss 6.5X20X50 is untouchable... JP.
 
For coyotes I would go with a decent 4-12x scope. If you were pegging gophers from a bench then you would want more magnification, in the 18-20x range.

I had run a Leupold VX-II 6-18x40 and was really happy, but this was for gophers. The one time I went coyote hunting in called him in to me, he circled behind and I blasted him at 25 feet (not yards, feet). At 6x all I could see was grey fur, less magnification would have been better.

As some one mentioned a great 3-9 would be better than a mediocre 4-12, talking clarity. Buying a Leupold new will not happen again for me, not when Korth policies and prices are as they are, however you may find a used deal on the EE. They are still good scopes, just over priced compared to other options. P & D had some demo models at great prices a while back, another way to save some cash but get a good scope.

If this is a walkabout gun vs a bipod/prone gun then weight and size is a consideration as well.

That's what I have as well. Conquest with rapid Z reticle. Remington XR-100 .204. But I put this together with the hopes of joining the "seekers of the red mist" crowd eventually. More for gophers than coyotes.
