I have been out of IPSC shooting for about five years. I have been thinking about getting back in but recently found out that the 140mm mags I have for my SVI are no longer allowed in standard class.

So, I have a few questions for any of you current standard class shooters using a double stack STI or SVI.

I see that Freedom Ventures has STI 126mm mags for sale (~$75) with angled Dawson bases as an extra (~$30). CRAFM has 124mm SVI mags with angled pads included in the price (~$135).

Which of these choices do you IPSC gurus recommend and why?

Are there any significant differences between or benefits to either of the STI and SVI mags beyond the 2mm difference in length?

Do I really need aftermarket angled base pads or will the factory base pads ones on the STI 126mm magazine suffice?

Am I going to need a new angled or reduced size of magwell to fit in the box with these mags inserted? The current magwell on my gun could best be described as huge, like an ice cream pail on the end of the grip.

Thanks in advance for your help.

svi sti mags

both mags will do the job
remember it's not the gun that aim and squeeze the trigger

you worry too much about little things....it's really an IPSC thing going on about equipement being better than other

best example is a 6000 dollars gun can be beaten by a 700$ glock the main difference is the guy holding the gun

as far as the mag question you can buy 2 STI mag for the price of one SVI

the main difference is that the svi is more polished but he will be really pinned to 10 rounds (like welded a piece inside the mag to limit 10) so if you want to go USPSA real limited ----you got to buy a new set of mags

i got the 126 sti with the dawson pads from freedom venture and never got a problem with it and i got more money in my pocket to shoot the gun more
the STI you got 2 choice of either 10 round only mags or pinned capacity

as far as you magwell anything cun be cut down with a grinder and file after to fit the box

cheers

Go with the SV mags from Frank at CRAFM because they are better mags. The basepads do make a difference now they have to fit in the pistol inside the box. The extra length goes a long way. Stating that I have the STI mags with Dawson pads. They don't have a hole on the bottom for easily taking them off for cleaning and such. Easy to drill. There are better options for basepads than the basic Dawson now a days.

Same as the magwell. I prefer the SV stainless steel ones on my STI because its a little smaller and fits my hand a little better - the STI is a little too big my tastes.

SVI mags are made for SVI guns... if you buy STI mags you need quite a bit of tuning to get them to work in an SV, you often have to change or modify the mag catch. Besides SVI offers a better quality product, they're stuff is proven to out last competition. Frank at CRAFM personally tunes each mag he sells so there guarantied to work. In my opinion its worth the extra $30.

Sorry, we should be listing that we have also black angled bases that are not Dawson, but just as good for $18 - made in Canada too.

STI says it's hit and miss with regards to thier mags working with SVs http://www.stiguns.com/FAQ.php
We can sell you the mags, and you can try them - if they don't work, you can return them if you don't alter them, but in the end - you may not want to take the risk and go straight to SV.

I have two Infinity pistols, new with steel grip and have been using STI mags pinned to 10 for last 3 years on old SVI pistol w/plastic grip and now on one with steel grip.
I tuned my mags myself using Dawson Kit. Everything, springs and followers are STI, basepads Dawson. Mags work excellent. I also have SPS mags. They are excellent mags and also work great, for SPS I go with Gramms followers and springs. Only downfall of STI against SPS or SVI is capacity. I have never been able to make it more then 16 against 18 in SVI or SPS, however how many of us are shooting internationally.
For USPSA I recommend 140mm, they can hold 20, maybe 21 rounds in well tuned STI.
Stay away from Rescomp mags with steel grip, they are excellent mags but fit only into plastic grip.

The factory magwell fits in the box, and you will need the angled bases pads with a magwell. The mags will still go in but its so much easier/quicker to have the pads.

I agree that a good gun won't make a bad shooter great, and a great shooter will be able to shoot any gun. But, when you have two shooters of equal talent, the gear can make the difference. There's a reason the top shooters use similar guns.

Tabernac. Has this thread ever gone sideways.

Thanks to those of you who made constructive comments before it spiralled off to the outer limits.

To the rest...I'm not sure what I did to deserve the insinuation out of the gate that I am not a good shooter and am worrying like an old woman about nothing nor how it morphed into a "Dave S. Glock is better than Mr. CZ big ##### and vice versa".

It's pretty simple. I have an SVI 2011 and a stack of 140mm mags that have been sitting in the safe for a while. I want to get back into competition and need new mags to stay in Standard. I just wanted to know whether spending the extra $ to get SVI mags was necessary. Sean was kind enough to answer that question.
