What make,model in .22cal for new girl shooter?

My soon to be 12 yr old daughter has taken up study for her pal.I have taken her hunting with me and have started to teach her some wilderness skills etc.l have been teaching her gun safety using a pellet gun,and she has become quite proficient in all aspects. All she says now is how she can't wait to get her first buck.Although having a couple .22s now ,l'd like find something fairly light and kid friendly.Any recommendations out there.
 
Hey Ken~my daughter is a small-framed, 11 yr. old and I had this same question about a year ago. They were new to the market then, but I ordered a Savage Rascal .22lr single-shot for her to use...and we've found it to be a perfect match. They ARE very kid-sized guns, but take it from me...nothing puts a kid OFF of shooting a .22 like a gun that doesn't fit! To my mind, a little too small beats allot too big. If your daughter is more the size of an adult, something like a Savage Mark II or a Marlin XT-22 might be a good choice, avoid the heavy barreled guns. If she's on the small side, I'd urge you to consider the Rascal.

The Henry Mini Bolt is fantastic for small framed shooters, and very accurate to boot! It is a traditional single shot, manual cocked bolt that is perfect for training and plinking. I bought one for my 7 year old son, who is now 8, and my wife fell in love with it for squirrels as she never misses with it.

Well built, stainless synthetic, accurate rifle that will end up getting passed on for many generations.
 
Thanks for the info,l actually had a couple nice little 22s.One was a Ace with birds eye maple stock,the other was a Oregon Arms chipmunk. Wish l hadn't sold them now!
 
If you have some spare time and want to add some extra love, you might look around for an old Cooey single shot to refinish. Maybe add some personal touches by way of carving if you are handy at that sort of thing. Try to come up with something that will make it uniquely her rifle. She will treasure it long after you are gone.
 
I would recommend the marlin xt22 youth. It is 4 pounds, has a single shot mag and uses marlins other mags too for when she's ready for a repeater, has a decent trigger, and comes in stainless. My blued one was $209 and works great.

Cooeys are good, and I had her shooting (or trying to shoot) a big 75, but the Savage has advantages (besides smaller size/less weight) that should be mentioned. There is no external cocking knob on the Rascal, it cocks on the up-stroke of the bolt...like a grown-up's .22. :) Also, you don't have to jam the round into the chamber like you would have to with a Cooey 75. Simply drop the round in..there is a red, spring-loaded feed ramp. As long as the round is centered...that feed ramp collapses (downward) as the bolt closes and chambers the round. The accutrigger is just icing on the cake.

I think Savage got this rifle right as a youth gun but admittedly, I have only really glanced at the Henry...and have never even looked at the Marlin AaronV suggested. The XT-22 Y might be a great choice if you think your daughter is too big for the Rascal. I know even my wife has shot the Rascal (too small for her) and she loved it. I think the small stature of the rifle gives some ladies a greater sense of control.

My two daughters started off with a pink thumbhole savage and a bright orange henry. the savage is a little easier to use as it cocks itself when you load a round. the henry has to have a knob pulled back to #### it. It is difficult for little hands.
the henry is stainless, and the savage has cheap blueing. My girls prefered the savage.
My girls have upgraded to very expensive rifles. Anschutz Fortner and Izhmash 7-3. but they are shooting more than ever.
