what makes a gun an antique?

an older friend of mine has a very old looking revolver and im wondering if it's an antique or not. it's a smith and wesson 38 special that looks like it's from the 30's. i have absolutely no knowledge about antique guns so i thought i'd ask.

Pre 1898 fabrication and not be chambered for certain calibers.

That particular gun doesn't sound like a precribed antique. IIRC .38spl came out in 1899?

Age.....from the 1930's is not old enough. has to be prior 1898.
