I've had deer come in down wind of me and even after seeing me, didn't go dashing off. Pretty sure it was because I was sitting perfectly still.
I believe they can get used to human scent, so that in itself might not frighten them. But once they wake up to how close the source is, that might be the game changer.
But, I think they also have to identify us as a source of danger. A couple years ago I had to walk within 10 yards of a fawn, getting between it and the herd I was trying to put a sneak on. No concern at all on its part.

There are three basic subspecies of whitetail deer:

1) Truly wild deer. They have never encountered humans before, and are not necessarily afraid of a human encounter. I've had wild deer approach me to a distance of 20 ft, apparently quite curious.
2) Cottage deer. These deer are quite used to friendly human habitation, often being fed by innocent cottagers. These deer are pretty close to being pets.
3) Hunt camp deer. These deer are scared sh*tless of any human activity, particularly orange people in 4 wheelers. You cant get within 500 yards of them.

Hunting in urban areas is always an interesting mix of 2 and 3. I've hunted in a city for 10 years now, and have seen both exhibited.

The ones who've been previously shot at are 3 and those that haven't are 2 lol
