What makes glocks so popular????

I shoot the G17 & my 1911 equally. If it aint' broke don't fix. And neither are broke.

Sir, I kindly ask that you retract your big flabby statement that I would EVER countenance one of those horrible things in my collection of handguns, except perhaps at such time when I am rich enough to own museum pieces. (i.e. - Here is the neato plastic invention that a shovel-maker for the Austrian army came up with when asked to design a handgun. It was the spark that started a fire of better designs within a few years of it's introduction.)

Until I am that rich, I only buy handguns that I like to shoot!

:)

Regards,

Neal

In 1963 a man who made tractors begin to make sport cars with a little succes. If i remember correctly his name was Ferruccio Lamborghini. I think his company is still in buisness today and make ok cars.

Best thing about 'em is broad product support. Lots of factory and aftermarket parts and accessories available everywhere, much like a 1911.

This is probably the main reason they're so popular now. The Glock is the AR of the pistol world. And they became popular initially because when they debuted there weren't really any other pistols with the same simplicity and ease of operation (in addition to reliability, etc).

And considering the awful grip ergonomics, they're probably all masochists too. ;)

Glocks work better stock and can take more abuse than pretty much any other gun out there.

The grip angle on Glocks is identical to 1911 style pistols. The difference comes in the contour which throws most folks for a loop. Then again, many who "try" a Glock and are die hard 1911 fans will naturally find something wrong with it to justify their decision.

I actually had a similar analogy but different. Having experienced many types of pistols during my time as a private gun owner, close protection operator serving in Afghanistan and now a city police officer I have come to the conclusion:

The Glock is the AK-47, as the SIG P229 (for example) is the AR.. I have always compared those types of pistols as they are very different.

The Glock (in my personal opinion; and yes I do own two of them, and carry one on my side at work) is a piece of crap. Harshly put.. It is a simple idiot proof, dead reliable, pistol with interchangable parts, low maintenance and due to all this a very clumsy inaccurate pistol by comparison. But remember, this is exactly how Gaston designed the pistol.. For an idiot to pull out the gun, have it go BANG, and hit what the operator aims at. So this being said, the firearm performs as advertised and does this very well.

The SIG is the AR-15, more moving parts, higher maintenance, tighter action, way higher level of accuracy, the operator can manipulate all functions of the firearm via the hammer, decoker etc; in my opinion the selling feature of the firearm as this is a professional's gun.

Many have stated due to the all metal parts, and tighter action requires lots of lubrication making it a non-desert friendly firearm. Well I am an anti-lubrication theory type guy for both my ARs and Sigs, and never had any problems in the desert and more SF guys were using Sigs then anything else in those regions with no issues.

I do not own a Glock 9mm, but I shot a friends Model 17, at the local range.

My brief impression was it was very accurate....it felt like s&*t in my paws, but that's just me.
To myself the gun 'feels' too light in the hand. Despite this lack of confidence, the gun DID print nice & tight at 20 yards paper targets.

I am a dinosaur, I freely admit this fact....and quickly retreated to my Colt/S&W DA revolvers....(plus my 1991A1) ;)

It's a simple concept..... Glocks work, period!

I found that out in 1995 when I shot a Glock 22 for the first time. Put over 5,000 rounds thru it that first week. Not one fail to fire, extract, eject or feed. Still shooting that same G22 today. Many thousands thru it since. Never one hitch..... I'm convinced..... Glocks work.

They are ugly, non-romantic, a dime-a-dozen, yada, yada, yada.... but they work!

My .02............. your mileage may vary.....

BTW - I still love my 1911's.... but if I had to bet on one pistol to defend my life that well used G22 would be my first choice.

What he said.... :D

Rainman you hit the nail on the head with your comparison of AK vs. AR. I agree whole heartily with that. It also leads me to suggest that since the AK is the most widely used, manufactured rifle on the planet, that ease of use and reliability has something to do with it.

Thinking in those terms can explain to most people just why glocks are so popular. I started this thread when I was considering buying one and just did not get it. I have since bought a G20 in 10mm and love it. I get it now.

Thanks to everyone who posted comments on this thread it's been very entertaining and informative.

care to back up that ill-informed statement?
Glocks are neither more durable nor more reliable than "pretty much any other gun out there". That's just pure koolaid. Glocks can and do jam under adverse conditions. Glocks can and do wear out with use (redleg stated a number of times on this board that from his experience with rental guns, Glock is nowhere near the top of the heap as far as durability is concerned). Glocks also have a number of design weaknesses, such as unsupported chambers that increase the probability of catastrophic failure and they are more prone to malfunction when "limp wristed" as demonstrated by the video below:

Glocks are okay guns but they certainly do not live up to the hype propagated by some "Glock enthusiasts" (read: koolaid drinkers). Like I said before, the main reasons for Glock's success are low prices and good marketing.
