What makes NR AR style / similar rifles more expensive in Canada

Personally I'd like to see someone offer a nr polymer receiver set. I know a lot of people have the hate on for a plastic gun. But if someone could offer a set under $500 I bet they would fly off the shelf but they could be produced in higher numbers much faster then the alternative. Plenty of company's offer reliable 80% lowers in the states for less then a case of beer up here so I'm sure it could be manufactured pretty affordably.

They're flying off the shelves at $1000, why cut your profit by 50%?

I never said for ether of the companies to do that. Why wouldn't you want something more redily available and more affordable?? It would be pretty sweet if we had a nr set up that was as abundant as the ar15 in the states at a similar price point.

Because if they directly copied ATRS or MDI designs that are already approved as NR they'd probably be sued for some kind of trademark or design patent violation. And if they created their own design they'd have two years of RCMP lab wait time that then results in a restricted classification and back to the drawing board. The problem here isn't the companies - they are doing what they can while handicapped by the RCMP. The RCMP Lab is the problem and probably is unconstitutional as a form of prior restraint. Of course, you COULD start selling guns as NR before you get approval and then get arrested for selling non-registered restricted firearms once the RCMP decides that your design is actually restricted. Or even prohib based on an opaque "readily converted to full auto" designation.

Best case for the Canadian firearm market is to see a new CPC gov't that is at least gun neutral, and allow some time for the guys at ATRS and MDI to expand (maybe some more competition too).

The more of these NR AR type rifles out there, the better it is for everybody. If the price of those receivers dropped by 20-40% or further (maybe ATRS or MDI licence their product for others to produce with royalties or something) it would open up the market much more, even the price of other components would see a drop after awhile due to higher volume shipments up north (assuming suppliers pass savings on), more canadian parts manufacturers would pop up too like triggertech, MRA etc..

the price is so high right now for an MS or SLR is because of the demand (huge) and supply (very limited). I waited 10 months for an SLR, and a year and counting for a MS. Expansion and driving prices down are critical for Canadian firearm survival IMO.

Imagine a Canada where a MS or SLR are just as or more common than a 10/22.
