What makes the CZ858 non-restricted?

Just a thought, how is a CZ-858 classified as non-restricted, while AR's or FNFAL's are restricted/prohibited? All 3 "look" like assault weapons (I don't like calling them that either but couldn't think of anything else atm), so what makes the CZ the exception?

It is not specifically named by order in council. Therefore as long as the barrel is over 18.25 inches its legal

was not on the market/known in 1993ish

could be wrong.

Like mentioned it wasn't kicking around Canada at that time. Newly imported rifles not specifically prohibited or restricted must be examined and classified based on much more than a soccer moms opinion of it. The semi auto only receivers and trigger groups coupled with an 18.5"+ barrel and 26"+ OAL and no current prohib/restricted FRT means it gets a fair shake. Its no different than a semi auto hunting rifle. Is it not?

No, I guess not really. It's too bad it just got the luck of being non-restricted while most other cool firearms didn't, haha.
Cool firearms? You mean ar15, ak47 and fal?
There are tons of options of "cool" firearms that are non restricted, see the new famae, the Swiss arms(pending) the tavor, the type97 coming in, its not just a cz phenomenon, has never been really.
Even some really cool looking fn bullpups are non restricted.

Government oversight, that is being looked at to be corrected.

^^This.

Illogical fear is the only reason for classification IMHO

Quick reply to this message

because they are black , i'm sure if they was white or pink that will be good , those color are less dangerous ^^

While you are correct, your list of four will set you back close to $10K, while you could/should be able to get an AR, AK and FAL for less than $3K.

There are a couple of reasons:

1) It wasn't known during the 90s when C-68 was being planned and implemented. The anti gun types didn't know about it so they couldn't get an OIC to prohibit it by name
2) It's based more off the STG44 than anything else. It's not AK47 based or any other named prohibited firearm. So it's not prohibited by name or as a variant of anything
3) The barrel is 18.5" long and it's purposely built as semi auto only

It meets all of the requirements for a non restricted firearm and the political climate changed so the anti gun types couldn't simply get an OIC prohibiting it.

This is a small victory though. The main sporting rifle today is the AR based rifles. They originally prohibited them but the firearms organizations were successful in arguing that it has a use for sporting with service rifle competition which is international. So they restricted the AR rifles. The problem is the AR is the most modular design around and can be a tack driver to a perfect hunting rifle. Essentially they were able to restrict 21st century equivalent to the mauser action based rifles. It wasn't apparent at the time but it sure is clear now.

And in 2 days this will be the hot new topic on CBC and global news... Why must firearms owners and enthusiasts continually ask these questions and make comparisons? The simple fact is a semi auto is a semi auto regardless of type, style etc. Comparing a non-restricted to a restricted or prohib in defence of the restricted/prohib rarely works in anyone's favor other than giving the Mainstream media some new/old fodder . The difference is that the barrel steel is a Canadian semi auto approved alloy ;) and there is no capacity/reservoir for full auto blinker fluid in the 858's  .

Why not? It's good to show how ridiculous the laws are and how they are clearly made for and by people who know nothing about firearms. Semi auto is nothing new. The Russians fielded reliable semi autos in 1938. 1911 pistol anyone? The idea that a purposely built semi auto should be prohibited or restricted is complete crap. The media already have this premise ingrained. Us posting/discussing this topic serves to cement the pro firearms views and how these laws are complete crap. It helps people understand why and how these laws came into place. So we can fight to stop it from happening again. The only thing currently in the way of another C68 or basically us becoming the UK has been the information age. IE the internet. Being able to gather like minded people who can work towards stopping the anti BS has been our saving grace. Don't talk about? Why not? We should be discussing it and discussing ways to prevent short sighted, crusaders from screwing over our sport/hobby.
