What material to use for filling rear bag?

For bags I use in the field, I fill with sand, so that it can still be carried, for bench use I fill with lead shot, usually screenings from my shotmaking.

Sand blasting grit.

Princess Auto. Dirt cheap and you get enough for everyone you know in WESTERN Canada.

If you are in the OK Valley, got some to spare.

Thanks, I'll probably pick some up later at PA.

Is it this one?

LOL at the Western Canada comment.

It's the least expensive stuff they carry. comes in a 50lbs bag or something that size. I think it is around $10???? Been a while since I bought it. Black in colour.

I like the idea of mixing lead shot but my bags are heavy enough and I do have to move them around.

I followed the recommendation provided with the bag. Playground sand in the ears and "black beauty" sand blast medium in the main body.

Brian, if you can't find the glass bead then use sifted and rinsed/dried beach sand for now. Just be sure to settle the sand (or whatever you use) into the bag with a chopstick (I am sure you must have one by the minute rice box :D). They will take more than you can pour in with just a funnel.

Stay away from putting anything clunky in there.

Here is the glass bead I use(or very similar):

Ask if they have one that split open...maybe you can take a gallon can of it away for cheap.

I went and bought a bag of the one that I posted the link of, it was 13 bucks or something.

Picking up the rear bag tomorrow from Sumas. I was tempted to go with Edgewood but seeing I'm on EI, I had to watch my spendings ;)

Remember when businesses provided ashtrays filled with white sand? I found a bag of it at work and it works just fine.

Glass bead

If you want some Glass bead let me know , i have a couple of bags of the used stuff thats gone through the cabinet at work , its a bit finer that the unused media but works well as rear bag material.

When you fill the bag you really need to settle/pack the contents, then fill more, pack it down, fill some more, if you don't do that you will be disappointed first time out, and it all settles and looks like a pancake.

You coming to Vokes this weekend? :D

I could use a bit more as I ran out...LOL

Geez, I can't believe this thread...

The Sand and Glass Beads used in sandblasting machines
have the nasty habits to
1. go into the smallest pores and cavities of objects (so, in time,
they will will find their way out of your bag - no matter how good the seams are)
2. they are abrasive as hell,
so they can't wait to get between the moving parts of your gun
and do what they were engineered to do.

I have been using Glass bead in my protektor bag with my custom built Competition rifles for 3 yrs now...not one single solitary bead has found it's way into any of my 4 customs or into any of my off the shelf rifles.....do you not think that if I thought there was a chance of ruining any 1 of my guns that I would recommend the glass bead to other people, let alone use it myself?

How in the hell is the media from the bag going to get into the moving parts of the rifle?
Unless you are banging on the top of the action/scope with a bag that has a hole in the seams I can't forsee a problem. You can buy a "Heavy Sand" specifically for filling bags, many F-Class and BR shooters use this stuff and I have yet to hear of one person getting sand from their bag in the moving parts of their actions.

Unless you have some personal experience with the materials that have been suggested by others, your point is moot.
