What milsurp would you hunt with in northern Ontario. Can be some pretty thick bush. I was thinking of m38 or m44. Maybe an sks.

Black bear and deer.

Right on man !, since the last 3 years I am taking my SKS for deer & bear hunting and my M44 for Moose season.

The SKS is really fun, light & semi-auto, great to hunt with.

The good old parkerised lee enfeilds were quite common here as rugged and dependable beginers rifles. Many still in use around here, not sure about in Ontario

I used a Spanish Mauser FR8 short barreled carbine for guiding bear hunters up north in Manitoba for a few years. It was great. It was my first rifle. Chambered in .308 18.5 inch bbl solid Mauser bolt action just as issued. I used the Winchester180 grain powerpoints to take a couple of black bears, one moose and a few deer over the years. It is a bit heavy but it shoots well, and it is tough as nails.

My first deer rifle was a hand-me-down Lee Enfield No. 1 Mk III. One of my older brothers eventually claimed it and I was not sorry to see it go. Next was a cut-down Mauser 98 that I picked up at an auction for $75. BYF 42. I still have that rifle, though it's now a 7x57. I hunted with a Garand a few times, but found it heavy and clumsy. Kicking myself now for trading it off, but it would have been a safe queen.

I would not hunt with an SKS.

An SKS is basically just a semi-auto .30-30, and frankly a LOT of guys now hunt with them. Just use proper hunting ammo - not surplus FMJ.

That said, my milsurps are for range fun. Life is too short to hunt with an ugly gun.

Yah, I keep reading about how the 7.62x39 is equivalent to the .30/30, but it just ain't so. 7.62 runs a 125 gr bullet at around 2,300 fps. The .30/30 can beat that with a 150 gr. Then try loading a 170 gr. bullet in the x39 case and tell me what sort of speed you're getting.

I've always had a Bubba Lee as a truck/camp/backup rifle. What would I purposely set out with? K98, P14, LE, Springfield, Martini, trapdoor, Rolling Block...there is a list but the SKS, Mosin and Arisaka aren't on it.

Over the years - No.5 Jungle Carbine, No.4 sporter, SKS, and a remanufactured M1917 with a 303 bolt in 300 Win Mag.

I would take a .308 Garand into a wild bore enclosure as long as the provincial game laws don't apply. Eight fast shots is better than a very slow second shot.

Sounds awesome ! Might try to find one ! M44 or M38 is definitely on the bill... Already have an sks... I mean who doesn't ?

As for they are too ugly to hunt with ! What is that garbage ! lol

Feel the history in your hands ! Nothing worse then the guys who buy a 2000 rifle and cringe at the thought of actually using it ! It might get scratched !

one of the very nicest setups I saw for Ontario hunting with a milsurp was a little Swedish Mauser that had a short (20" iirc) .358 Winchester barrel on it. I don't believe that the owner loaded it 'balls to the wall' but I am confident it would do anything in Ontario ... certainly anything a classic Mannlicher Schoenauer would do and just as pretty!

A good old .303 would be my first choice, either No.4 or No.1. A 10 shot, easily removed magazine, get ammo easy, lots of magazine writer "knockdown power", plus cheap to buy. Removable magazine would be the main selling point for me. :)
