What moa base for this scope on an AI aw308?

Am I correct in thinking this scope, the 3-12x50 s&b pmii would work well with an 18moa mount on an aw308?

Thanks

I have that exact optic in the 28 moa AI one piece mount. The 28 will give you more elevation and is what I would recommend.

generally speaking, for true long range, as close to 1/2 the scope adjustment should be what is in your mounting system , so with 200cm (roughly 70moa or 20 mills) ideally you would run 35MOA / 10 mill in your mounts and rails.. this allows for 100yd zero and will let you dial out as far as possible..

but this really is dependent on how far you want to shoot, you can run more or less as you choose but more -might not get the standard 100yd zero, less, you may not be able to dial up as much as you want.

Ok. Yeh my math get sketchy converting from mils to moa.
I hate all things imperial and the sooner the USA moves to metric the better.

I was going to get a 5-25 s&b. But the 3-12 is a tempting sale right now.

For a 308 the AI 28 is perfect. The next one up is the 45 moa and is meant for the .50 and .338 Lap mag. With the 28 I can still dial elev on that scope well past the 308's max range (1200).

According to my data I need 15.8 Mil on top of my 100m zero to get a 175smk@2500fps out to 1000m. I have way more elev left in that turret than that. I just got my chrony and will be playing with my rounds to get my 175's moving above 2600 fps (26" barrel).

to convert MOA to mills - MOA (devide by ) 3.6 ex 100MOA/ 3.6 = 27.7 mills

to convery mills to MOA - MILs (mutiply by) 3.6 ex 23mil x 3.6 = 82.25MOA

this isnt 100% exact as a true MOA is 1.047" at 100yard and a mil is 3.6 at 100 meters... since MOA is done in yards and mil in meters.. but really its damn close enough

Haha, very true. So far I have found the best results with 41.2gr imr4895 in lapua brass for the 175 in that rifle, however it shoots everything pretty darn well.
Given the barrel length it should be close to 2600 but I will find out for sure when I set up my new chrony. As long as its over 2550 I'll be happy as that duplicates the trajectory of the old Dupont M118 round that I am used to.

Ok. So if my mental calculations are correct. A 308 needs about 40moa of drop to get to 1000m.

So if the internal range of the scope is at least 40, in theory a 0moa would get you out to 1000m. I know wind age will restrict these in reality, but I'm just crunching numbers.

So either an 18, 28 or 45 will all get the s&b scopes (the 3-12 or 5-25) out to 1000m as they all have enough internal adjustment. And the extra moa will allow for a margin for reduced elevation due to wind age.

I have access to an 18 or 45 mount right now. I was going to get the 5-25x56 but the 3-12 is a huge saving. So I might just go with the 18 moa for now, which i could machine to fit the 5-25 if necessary, if I get that scope, or will be just fine on the 3-12. and only go for a higher mount if I start reaching the limits.

Also look at the Spuhr mounts, I did not know about them when I put my rifle together. If I were to do it over I would get their 30 moa mount.

Yeh I would consider them for sure in the future. But right now those mounts are with the package so I'll stick with them for now.
