I have my norinco m305 and i am wondering, i see all these post on people changing this or modifying that. What modifications or parts to replace should i definatly do to make it a decent hunting rifle. And i use the iron sight for hunting, not a scope.

And my rifle does not have one thing changed from factory. Its completely 100% stock.

been looking around at this too. Apparently an Op rod spring guide is manditory...or highly recommended

Apparently it's too big for Chinese springs so you have to replace the spring too. I hear hungry sells them but not sure how you order them from him. Haven't really looked cause i don't have the rifle yet but I'm sure it's not tough to find out once i get it.

I just got a new op rod spring guide and ordered a spring from Hungry. Email transfer the money and I'm expecting it in the mail this week. Super easy. Looking forward to giving it a shot... Or many.

The only modifications that are mandatory are issues that keep the gun from working. Most Norincos will work fine without any parts replacement or adjustments. Some guns benefit from some tweaks and parts replacement, but you have to see what is deficient on your gun, first.

Nope, that one works great with either chinese or usgi spring.

Just take out of the box clean it ,grease it and shoot it ....youl be suprised at what itl do just the way it is ...but if you do start tweeking it ..its what ever turns your crank as to options... So many things to try So little money
first thing i did was buy a second case of ammo ...

Thanks guys. A couple more things:

Have any of you had a problem with the roller on the bolt group coming out of it's spot in the operating handle? This happened while I was hunting moose last fall. I had a little fall and about 30 minutes later noticed it when i went ti chamber a round. Like the handle went back and forth but didn't bring the bolt with it.

Also I heard on here one time that shooting 180 grain .308 out of the m305 was hard on the rifle? Something about it being designed for i think it was 158grains (I'm not exactly sure, but it was less than 180), is this a bunch of BS or is there merit to this?

Replies are much apprecieated.

When I first got mine this happened. Turned out my op rod wasn't seated in the track properly. It was in the track but not... Clicked in?
Hasn't happened since.

Far as I understand 180gr is okay for hunting, but if your doing lots of blastin':D
You might be replacing some parts.
So far I've only fired the norc ammo though so I'm NOT speaking from experience.

You are in Edmonton... I've got clinics in Cgy on 21 and 22 July and then Fort Mac on 28/29 July and that latter clinic is a TWO day venue with lots of shooting and coaching involved.

No mods are necessary, really. Should you desire to tighten things up, that's when the M14 lends itself to all the tweaking and the addiction :runaway: begins! :D

I just bought a new shorty last week for my own teaching purposes. I wanted to play with the iron sights. They worked OKAY, but I want total reliability so I replaced the rear sight knobs with M1 Garand knobs (elevation and windage) from Ebay.

Then I wanted the PING sound from my M1A, so I knocked (big hammer) off the existing factory Norc flash suppressor and replaced that unit.

I put lots of .308 ammo through the barrel so, I wanted a USGI dimensioned gas cylinder. Your Norc gas cylinder will go several thousand rounds, trust me. Once anything breaks, I want the supply (brownells) of gas pistons and other parts to be available. So I replaced the gas cylinder (you don't need to do this, but I prefer it) with parts from  Brownells. I know, they nail me for shipping, but I want some M1A parts on my shorty.

Yes, the factory Norc front sight mounts up nicely on the M1A flash suppressor that is on my shorty right now. Soon... a USGI glass stock for it's role as a truck gun, even if I'm not manly (or rich) enough to own a pickup truck. My Rav4 will have to suffice as a manly (wannabee truck) vehicle. :)

So, you have to replace anything? Not really!

Cheers and happy M14 addiction....

Barney

Only thing I needed to change was my OEM Norinco rear site to a USGI rear site. The Norinco model adjustment wheels were machined off center from day one and hence did not have much adjustment and would spin out.
