What NOT to do with a hunting rifle!! Pics

if i remember corectly there is a ruger ultra light .308 with a barrel split like that, hanging on the wall, in 100 mile house b.c. at exeter sporting goods.

Jude still has that rifle hanging on the wall above the new rifles.

As for barrel splits I have seen over a half dozen rifles split from obstructions over the last 30-some years. Most were split at the muzzle like the one in the first post of this thread, a couple were split at the chamber and the actions were fubar as well. At least one was a "bird cage" that was split in the middle while remaining intact at both ends.

I've never seen that happen with a rifle but I've seen it with a barrel obstruction in a Remington 870, it was ugly! Nobody got seriously hurt though. I also was standing very close to a guy once at the Orillia gun club that was using a 44 Black Hawk which blew up on him casting out scrapnel everywhere about 7 or 8 yrs ago. The shooter had minor injuries and we all had our ears ringing for hours after. I think he was using someone elses reloads or something.

The bore sighter is held in place by an expandable arbour. When the bullet strikes the end of the arbor, the result is a great deal of force exerted outward on the muzzle of the barrel that results in the barrel splitting. The split is so even because the pressure exerted is divided evenly by the arbor and because it may have followed the rifling grooves.

he passed ou when he was stirrin the crack pot obviously got toasted!

Here's another pic from the annals of gun folklore of another popular CGN'er (one of the better looking ones) after he failed to check for bore obstructions. :p

I have seen bbls split like that as well, I believe the rifling is responsible fo rthe eveness of the split, in fact of you look at one up close, you will see thet often split along the rifling.

The middle pic does not belong though... someone added that.

Seems like everyone on CGN thinks everything is photoshopped, well as an avid photoshop user and professional photographer... I can tell you it is not that easy to make something like that and it would take hours, so why would you?

OK well i Didnt Photo Chop anything i was just passing on the info so people think twice about sticking things in the end of there barrels.:D
