Hey I just got a new .22 mostly for the girlfriend to shoot. It's a tactical scar replica style. I am interested in equipping an optic of some sort and it would be first purchase of one. What do you recommend . Gun will mostly be used for short/medium range like max 40yards . Any links would be greatly appreciated

Gun- GSG 15

I've had everything from 24x scopes to irons on 22's over the years. In the end, for a semi auto 22, I'd say a red dot of some form is the most fun. I run a vortex strikefire. Inexpensive but decent.
For a bolt action, you'll get a lot of opinions. You can't go wrong with a quality 3x9 or 4x12 scope in the $3-$400 range. Vortex, leupold, Burris, redfield....

If you're plinking @ reactive targets (tin cans, clay pigeons, steel targets) then a red dot would fit the type of gun for sure. I personally don't care much for them, but my eyes aren't what they once were either. There is a BIG difference between the entry level ones and the "good" ones...but you have to shell-out some $ for those.

If you're punching paper off a rest, then a scope is better. Don't need much magnification at that range, but you want a scope with AO or Side Focus that can work so close. Most cheap hunting scopes WITHOUT either have a parallax setting of 100 yards, meaning you can't be guaranteed it'll work right any closer. Even rimfire-specific scopes like the Leupolds have a parallax setting of 50 yards+. AO scopes almost always can dial-in closer than that.

I put a bushnell rimfire 2-7 on my MK22 that works great and it gives me the flexibility for what magnification i want depending on the range. I'm not sure how the buttstock on the GSG compares to the ISSC but I had to put an additional riser underneath the scope rings to get the scope high enough for a good cheek weld so that's also something to consider.

Interesting comment and now you are going to pick out the optics . . .

A red dot is fun for fast action shooting but a scope might suggest the most accurate brand of ammo.
It may not be that significant but 2" at 100 with CCI MiniMags round nose versus 6+ " with the same in hollow point.

the 4x or 2x7 x20 have been on 22s for years-mof they used to be included on some "packages-"i wouldn't spend big bucks on a 22 as the accuracy just isn't there- there are such tolerances built into 22 ammo that it doesn't warrant it

What the issue? Horseman . It is mostly for the gf and she can't shoot iron sites at all. Obviously I'm shooting it too but it was purchased so she could enjoy the fun aswell. Ended up getting a $100 red dot. Works fine. The magnifiers are nice thoe

Well done! Red Dots are fun. I use a Burris fastfire 3 on my Smith 41. I am planning to try it on my 10-22 as well.

Picking up a 10/22 this week at cabela's. (They are on sale!) I need a cheap scope. What would be a good choice for 22 lr? Simmons 3-9x 32 or cabelas rimfire scope 3-9x 40 (also on sale, making both priced at 74. 99 cad)

Thanks in advance

I use a 4x fixed on my GSG 15. It's great for plinking and in my mind perfect for the rifle. Don't know about you but my gsg was never meant for precise shooting, it's just a fun little gat to squeeze out 22 rounds quickly and stay on target easily.

Cabelas rim fire is the way to go. One of their sales guys summed it up perfectly for me, if it breaks 10 years down the road since it says cabelas on it you can drop it on the counter and we will give you a new one no questions asked.
Other then craftsman tools no one really does that anymore.

Is this true of the caliber in general or the rifle in question?

the cabelas rimfire has the paralex set at 100 yards, might be an issue shooting at 50 yards and closer. something to consider.
