I ordered a new ruger#1 in 257 weatherby 28inch barrel
Now I am guessing I have a few months to decide on a scope.
Thoughts?
I was pondering Swarovski z3
Maybe ziess conquest hd5
Or Leupold vx3
What do you think?
Never owned a weatherby cartrige before but the 257 has always interested me
Thanks in advance

To my way of thinking the Leupold is tops in value if not in quality. My high end scopes are Night Force and S&B, which are also good choices. More importantly, choose the scope with the end use of the rifle in mind. A moose rifle doesn't need big power magnification, but a long range varmint rifle might. There's lots of things that .257 should be able to do well.

What and where are you using the rifle for? What are the anticipated distances that you will be shooting? Is it a deer rifle? Goat rifle?

In general a VX-3 3.5-10X40mm will cover 99% of hunting situations... for a .257 WBEE if you anticipate longer ranges, you might want to go to the VX-3 4.5-14X40mm.

I have a VX3 6.5-20 with varmint hunters reticle on mine but it's strictly an open field gun, no bush. A 4.5-14 would be a good compromise for an all around as in your case. Or you can get a pricier scope with a bigger zoom range, like a Swarovski Z5/Z6 or Leupold VX6.

based on your criteria, I would choose a couple of optics and sight in before each trip..... some great suggestions here.... I share Hoyt's love of the 2.5-8.... as well as bearkilr's love of the 4.5 - 14.....

if you went with two scopes and a quick change setup, you would be good to go....

you could even have a load developed for each scope.....

I have a VX-3 4.5-14 x 50 with B&C on my current one, and a 4.5-14 x 40 with B&C on the last one. The one before that wore a 4.5-14 x 40 VX111 LR before my son took it over when he was 11. In the interests of keeping things simple for him I set it up with fixed 6 FX3. He has never bothered to change it and somehow seems to keep killing things.

I like the 4.5-14 power range, and for me that is best handled with an AO. Without the AO, I'll drop back to the 3.5-10.

People seem to manage muzzle-brakes on 26" barrels and don't seem to strain anything. What is that, a couple ounces?

And the falling block lops off at least 3 inches of overall length over a bolt rifle.

I'm putting a Burris Veracity 5-25x50 on my .257 Wby #1 when it gets here. I ordered the 30mm rings with the rifle. The #1's mounts are situated quite far forward so one advantage with the long Burris is that it will sit back a ways without running out of tube. It has plenty of long range power and a really nice varmint type FFP reticle with wind compensation holds. The BDC should be nearly perfect for the .257's trajectory, too. It may not have the classic Leupold look but I think it will be a superb match.

Since my current sheep gun is my 54cal cap and ball with a 32 inch barrel I'm sure the 28 inch tube on a #1 won't be a issue to pack up the mountain.
Liking the 4.5-14 Leupold
But does anyone have a Swarovski z3?
How does it stack up for $300 more
