what part of a Beretta CX-4 is the registered part?

tried looking for this info, and wasn't sure, so I decided to post here.
hope someone can clue me in.

is it the lower part? or the upper part with the barrel?

also, will the CX-4 also take a 96 magazine? i remember reading somewhere that it did, but can't seem to find the thread again.
 
I think the upper has the serial number on it....and it probably is the registered part (I'm not 100% sure).

96 mags fit in my Cx4 storm, I haven't made it out to the range to test function yet though.
 
The serial number is on the upper. It is the controlled part. If your gun is set up to take 92/96 mags it will take those mags. Some are set up to take PX4 mags, but it is easy and cheap to change the mag adaptor out if you want to use the other type of mags.
 
I was asking because I didn't see a serial number on the upper. Just on the barrel and on the lower (on the inside, just underneath the barrel)
