What percentage have handled an AK?

So many of these posts are (IMO) mental mastrubation; so forgive me if this is one of the dreaded few.
I've never shot an AK-47. I've handled one in '98 at a buddies kitchen table (BTW he got rid of it). Pretty crude; it was a Norc he said.
I've asked one of my relatives in Nevada about them and he said " F--king farm equiptment, made for peasants"
And he is a gunnut ( he own's 3 AK's himself, an Polish made Draganov, SVT-40 {which strangely enough is way more expensive than what we pay}; all the neat toys).
If this requires a poll or something; someone who's more active than I... kick it up a notch.
I know a large percentage want them ( Que the sad violin music), but had we actually handled them would we still desire one?
Or would we realize they are "Farm equiptment"?
Armed forces guys; if you were to throw your opinions out on this topic that'd be great as they mean much more than the weekend warriors.
 
I suppose my moniker will imply a bit of bias, but I have handled and fired various AKs (semi and full auto, fixed and underfolders), as well as a variety of other automatic firearms such as the M16, AR-18, Thompson, Uzi, FN MAG, etc. Do I still desire an AK? Again, I point to my screen name.

Most people who spout garbage about the AK are the same type of snob that look down on any other firearm not made in the U.S. or Canada as junk. Narrow minded elitists that can't conceive something effective, reliable, and well-built was manufactured outside their own borders, let alone in an "enemy" state (as they've been raised to believe).

There's a reason some 70 million have been built.
 
I owned a Mini-30 back when you could use 30rd mags and you could shoot just about anywhere, 7.62x39 cal. When non-corrosive ammo was dirt cheap. I'm sure it was prolly a nicer gun than a AK. Is that close enough :D
 
Handled and shot in vegas at The Gun Store on Tropicana ave. The range is absolutely tiny, but it was still an unforgettable experience. The felt very loose so to speak, with the internals a bit rattley due to the wide tolerances of the parts used. Full auto mode was difficult to stay on target as the gun felt very light.

Its a very cool weapon though, but I can't see full auto on these being very effective if the range is >50 meters.
 
There is a couple of AK's in our training inventory, shoot them quite often, never seem to fail, never seem to jam up either...........goon piece of equipment.

I handled some in yugo and...

Well designed solid, not overly long in the length of pull. Most importantly to me never saw one that wouldn't shoot no matter what condition it was in. With a shooter who is trained it is a minute of man rifle out to 300m. And that round is just pure nasty. penetration of hard objects was scary as hell.
 
Overrated, machine gun made for peasants, that are not educated in gun care is 110% correct.
At anything past 300 meters, hoo-ah piece of sh@t! It's only redeeming quality is reliability in dirt/mud IMHO.
Also got to fire an SVD. It's like an FN battle rifle with a scope, but without the desired accuracy.
So you have now double the range of an AK-47..............kind-of.

i dont see why a weekend warrior would even be inclined to give an opinion when you have discounted it already.
 
I have shot one on my last tour and I intend to shoot another one on this tour.

They are built like tanks and seem to keep going with little care or maint. I did not find it all that accurate, but Im not a `great`shot either, trigger was terrible with alot of grit. I can blame the conditions for that.

I would like to own one based on the history of them and such but it wouldnt be something I would like to shoot on a reg basis though.

i was replying to the OP and you if you think i was being disrespectful to you (or servicemen), then you lack common sense.
 
I've got a jack-all at home...if I could have an AK too, I would. Function over form works for me.
I'm curious though; are they accurate enough to be more than a tool?
I've shot deer with SKS's; they work quite well if I do my part. Is an average AK capable of putting a round into the front quarter of a deer at 200 paces? Or is it going to make you chase & clean a gutshot deer?
Effective people shooters don't always make effective game / target guns correct?
I've never played with Black rifles neither; but I'm under the understanding that they can aptly do precision work.
Is the saying " M-16's ( or M-4's or any of the other names; for basically the same gun, correct?) are like a scalpel, AK's are like an Axe" correct?

And I don't mean to offend anyone. But I'm thinking; seen as how they are prohib's that Armed forces personnel might be able to provide some insight that your average person can't. They do get to play with cooler toys, no doubt.
 
I think the VZ.58 is actually a better rifle than the AK:

-More ergonomic, quieter selector lever
-Bolt hold-open
-Better accuracy

Nobody can dispute that the AK is a robust, dependable rifle, but their capabilities are limited compared with other designs having better human engineering, modularity, and ability to take optics.
 
Shot one at Knobb Creek, fun as hell but I was in a full auto high so my judgment might have been off. If owning one was a legal option in Canada there would be one in my safe.

I'm going to guess that you made that Weekend Warrior comment ignorant of the fact that "Weekend Warrior" is a term most commonly used to describe the men and women of our Armed Forces Reserves?

How's that foot taste anyway? :)
