Fairly new to handguns...

I'm pretty settled for a 9mm mainly for cost and +/- 5'' barrel
Looking for an all around handgun for plinking and maybe more (competition however I know nothing about that...)

What's the best bang for the buck since of course price is an issue

Springfield XD
glock
CZ
taurus

I like HK but likely too expensive...

others?

Any info appreciated

Grand Power K100 is $595 at Marstar. It has a 108mm barrel and is a top notch 9mm that has second to none accuracy. Also the designer and owner of this pistol is a member here. He goes by the name of K100. If you do a search you'll find a few threads on this gun.

I would avoid the Taurus. I have handled one and they do feel like a Berreta but the quality seems to be hit and miss. Also many here have experianced the pain of trying to get parts.

Your other choices are good ones. I've handled a Glock but didn't like it although many swear by them and their are lots of mods available. The CZ is a great and reliable gun but some find it a bit heavy for a 9mm. I have no experiance with the XD. Your other choices are a used Sig or HK which often come up on the exchange forums. Your best bet is to handle them and find what fits you best. I'm in the same boat as you and I'm torn between the CZ SP-01 and the Grand Power

Ace

Space Ace....what is the best price you have found on a SP-01? I'm thinking of buying one.

go with Taurus PT99; stainless is around $670 great value!

Peopel who own them love 'em! PT92/99 is often discribed as 'tough as a $2 steak' ;)

I for one can not make up my mind on the K100. I have thought about it for a very long time. I even ordered it once and then cancelled my order. I am not sure what is holding me back. I am afraid of a mediocre finish may be. I think it would help if I could just see one in person which is an impossibility dealing with Marstar.

As for which one you should seriously consider. I do not think you are comparing apples to apples with the selection listed above. I think each one of those manufacturers produce a wide selection of products that are distinct and pretty much in a different class and price range than the others. In my opinion anyway.

I think you should look at your budget and based on that narrow down your selection of pistols. Then the choice may become easier.

I'd Glock or K100. Glock is a good beginner gun reliable and simple, also accurate.

XD is somewhat cheaper than a Glock but hard to get parts for if anything breaks. Although the XD does look cooler than the Glock

Get the CZ75-B!

Yeah, or he could be miles ahead of that and get a CZ75-B in 9mm... ;) :p

I'd go for a CZ-75 or Glock 17...or a Sig P226, but they're a little pricey. Used it may be doable. I also have an older Taurus PT-92, which is basically a copy of the Beretta 92F. I've found it to be every bit as good and well built as my Beretta and is quite a bit more accurate than Beretta 92Fs owned by several shooting buddies.

More recent production pistols have been hit or miss in terms of quality & reliability. At the same time Taurus has crappy customer service and NO Canadian repair center. If something breaks, you are basically SOL as it is almost impossible to find parts for them in Canada and a major pain to source them in the US or Taurus directly. Even guys in the USA are fed-up with Taurus' so-called customer service and have sworn off Taurus products for that reason. For the right price I'd buy another Taurus, but I wouldn't purchase new retail!

Get the CZ! It seems to fit almost everybody, is tough as nails, accurate and they have great customer service and stand behind their product. Glock is also good, but some people find their grip to be a little uncomfortable. Better to try/handle each before you buy. Good luck!

E) None of the above

Get a Beretta 92FS (got one, love it. reliable, accurate, and easy to shoot) or a Sig 226 - I want one and I will be getting one in .40 S&W within a year or so, I hope.

If you are going to handload, you can build up light target loads with cast bullets for just about any calibre for minimal cost per round, dosent matter which one.

I suggest Beretta because there are lots of aftermarket grips availiable so you can tailor the fit to your hand quite nicely.

The end all be all criteria is go to a few shops, handle all the contenders, and see what fits your hand. can you reach all the controls comfortably? Slide release, safety, mag release? Is the trigger the right distance from the grip for you? If you can, get ahold of some of us here on the board that have a bunch of different options and shoot a bunch. Where do you live?

I'm south shore of Montreal...

Thanks for all the replies!!

agree with Kile :p if you will consider Glock also take a look at Beretta (which is roughly in the same price range) you should be able to find one for $900 new (bruniton finish) if you look around might even find one for around $800 (on sale only)

I'm curious in what espects exactly is CZ 'miles ahead'? fit & finish? accuracy? reliability?

Don't overlook the Springfield XD9 or XD40. They are worth a look because they are reasonably priced, well made, comfortable in the hand and very accurate. The fit of the pistol is your hand is EVERYTHING. I don't care how "accurate" a pistol is supposed to be , you still have to be able to handle and shoot it properly. ;) You'll hate it if it doesn't fit your hand, or you can't reach any of the controls. Pistols that will give you problems if you've got small to medium hands are the Beretta 92FS/96 series, (except for the smaller-framed Elite 1A & Vertec), SIG's P220/P226 which are a bit better...they have a long reach to the DA trigger ('fixable' with SIG's 'short trigger'), but the decocker and slide lock controls are reachable.
You have to handle a pistol first before buying...don't limit yourself to pistols that you're told to buy here...look at as many different brands and types of pistols as possible, and go with the pistol that fits you best, and feels right in your hand. Trust your instincts. ;)

I always liked CZ; until I bought one. Now I freak'n love CZ! :D A CZ 75/85 would do you good There are a couple of finish options, there is a two tone model to choose from, and the SP-01 is just plain mean looking. ;) I don't know if you've had a chance to handle one yet, but everyone I've seen and handled is nice and tight, very nice fit and finish. Also one of the best fits for *my* hand so far. I'd definately recommend looking into them.

A gun is a tool .... never go "cheap" with a tool, it always ends up costing you more.

Go buy a Glock 17.

This will fit your requirements, and is indestructable and easy to clean and operate for a first timer.
It is easy to sell if you want to "get out" (which you won't)

Going cheap is far too expensive!

Now go buy the Glock 17 ... Do it now!
