What powder to hord?

I'm curious as to what would be the most accurate powder (with good temperature stability) for .223 Rem in a bolt gun and an AR platform? I'm thinking of a Berger flat base, 52 or 55gr. bullet, out to maybe 300 meters.

I know bolt-action and semi-auto are loaded differently, but will one powder do it all?

FWIW, I already have 16 lbs. of Varget.

To the OP; Hoard, hoard away. You won't regret it.:D

I'm glad I stock-piled like a squirrel before the ammo prices skyrocketed a few years ago.

I just wish I was living where there is a good range to shoot on year-round.:(

I do belieive the OP said the 308 was a semi...... If that the case I would stick with H-4895....

If it is not I vote for Varget &/or Benchmark.....

To the Benchmark 'unbelievers'...... pffff!

Benchmark works well in .223 all the way up to 68grs. and is absolutly awsome in .308.

Do you ever wonder why it's called Benchmark? :D

Cheers!

Great! Now I'm even more undecided. <sigh>
Let's see, I don't need the Hodgdon "extreme" powders. Just looking for bulk reloading for the AR. As mentioned before will be loading 62gr bullets. Cheap is good. If I need to make some more accurate loads I can use the Varget.

To those recommending the H4895, the burn rate is real close to H335. I think the spherical powder of the h335 will meter better in a volume measure, and the h335 is generally cheaper. Why are you confusing me more? :)

You guys do have me looking at the bulk 735 though.
Hey Henry can you get anything like this? The shipping and Haz-Mat from Higginson is a killer and I can't afford large bulk buys to justify the shipping.

Thanks guys.

Thanks Henry. I'll most likely try a pound here and a pound there till I find what I like. Talk to you soon!

Several years ago, I went with the 735. I am not looking to wring out the lasy foot-per-second or the last 1/16" in my group. I am not looking for a powder that will help me put 10 .308 bullets in a .311 hole. I shoot .243, .308, .303, and .30-06 for rifles and 12 and 20 ga for shotties. I now have just 2 powders on my bench (or will have soon, I have a 1/2 lb of IMR3031 left that someone gave me and I am using it in the .243). WC-735 and 700X. I know that these are not the world's best powders for each application, but they are sufficient to get me my game every year. The .308 shoots 5rd groups to .375" and the .30-06 does it to.386". That's good enough for me at 100yds. I can hit a 4" gong at 300yds ALL DAY LONG! The .303's do the same but at .75 to 1.5" groups, but they are older milsurp.
The first time I bought this powder, I only bought 7 lbs. But I bought it in a group buy of 21lbs and it cost me about $13 a pound. Last time I bought it was all 21lbs for me! You want to horde?? Horde this powder. You want to #### around finding out which powder is the absolute best in your rifle, then by all means play with everything out there. You can get some fantastic results with some of the more "modern" powder but your criteria was bulk, cheap, meters easy. That's WC-735 all the way. GROUP BUY!!

I am hording some surplus powder, slow stuff that I like, it is about the same as RL 22, I got it for about 14 bucks a pound, and will shoot a long time before it is gone. Horde whatever you get a chance to. Buy lots of it, as the price is only going up.

Don't bother hoarding. There's no need for that anymore. I'm getting lots in stock and my supplier has lots of stock too. I plan to always keep my inventory well stocked with 1, 4, & 8lb containers.
Regards, Henry

I whored Varget, and I'm a whore for Varget. My personal "hord" of Varget is closely guarded by a horde of Frickin' Demons!!!

Apologies to the OP, someone had to play spelling police :p
