I will shortly be starting to reload .45LC for cowboy action. I will be using 255gr cast lead bullets and am wondering where to start with powder. I am currently considering Tight Group, Trail Boss, or Clays. Any input on this would be appriciated.

Thanks

Since you are starting out, and the 45LC is a deep cartridge, use Trail Boss. It is a new, bulky powder especially designed for light loads in large cartridges, and is not position sensitive.

In comparison, you would have a hard time seeing a few grains of Tight Group or Clays in the bottom of a 45LC case.

Trail Boss is a few dollars a pound more expensive, but still worthwhile for at least your first pound of powder when you are starting out. It will give you a much better level of confidence being able to see if you have accidentally double charged a case. (BTW, this is my standard recommendation for new reloaders of handgun cartridges. The bulky powder makes it so you have less thing to worry about)

After you get the hang of reloading, you will find Tightgroup very versatile and Clays to be very clean.

I like Titegroup. Clays I have used in 45acp not 45 LColt.

Just got some Trail Boss. It should bulk up well in case. No chance of double charge.

Tiegroup is clean .Any load around 5.2 to 5.6 I found was accurate. Note loading 250 cast though.

But if just starting Trail Boss re safety.

The only thing you have to watch out for with Trail Boss is that you don't use compressed loads. The grains of powder can be easily broken, which may increase the burn rate unsafely.
