what power scope for a ultralite rifle .

I have a 2.5-8x36 Leupold on my Kimber. I think the weight of scope is 10 oz. Eye relief if fairly long. I don't think it would fit on a long action without offset rings.

I have and have ran VXII 2-7X33, VXII UL 3-9X33, M8 6X36, and FX3 6X42. The 3-9X33 UL is schit, no eye releif at all and only 1 oz lighter than my 2-7X33 with normal Leupy eye releif. The 6 powers are in a league of their own, they have insane eye releif and come up and center like an extension of your body. If 6X doesn't scare you to run, I'd recommend it.

would you go with a fixed 6 power or a 2 to 7. or more magnification..?
It would depend on the type of hunting you expect to do with this rifle.

If it's wide open and longer ranges, the 6x is a great scope that would work fine, but the 2x7 gives a very definite advantage at low power for close range and offers a bit more versatility. I personally own four Leupold 2x7s. They are my favorite hunting scope.

For a lightweight/ultralight rifle I would choose the Leupold FX-II 6x36 with the long range reticle. Lighter than the 2-7x33 VX-II and not much more than the VX-II 3-9x33 ultralight which Archie spoke about above.
