What power scope to use for SR

As is the chance of shooting with a dial type BDC set to the wrong setting.

That is the reason for reticles like the heavy ring in the original AUG optic. Put the target inside the ring, and to 300m, you'll get a hit. Same thing with the original sight on the AR-15. With a flat shooting rifle and a generous target, the point blank range is rather extended.

You know what would really throw most of the field for a loop? A BUIS match. Or one involving taping over the lense on the C79, and just using the battle sight on top. 100m and in, like the BCRA soldiers match. There's a skill most CAFguys aren't taught.

In basic we qualified wih irons. Not sure if they still do. That was a while ago. I shot once using the battle site. We had "extra" ammo. Most guys hit paper after some correction. Again though. That was a while ago as well.

The ring in the Australian AUG sight was built to fit a Figure 12 at 300 and there was no central aiming point (New Zealand was smart enough to demand a central dot as an aiming point). An optic designed to fit a specific target at a specific range is taking a shortcut to increasing hits during a 300m qualification shoot and is an example of how to handicap a nations shooters out of the box.

I like how at USAFSAM they have shooters run a couple matches with optics and then again with irons. I think I will be getting in on it this year, the only issue being the lack of decent irons in the CF system.

My AUG experience was limited to a commercially sold Austrian rifle. No idea how the ring would relate to a Fig.12. It was certainly easy to get hits at random targets at random distances. Hardly a precise system, though.

I would like to participate in SR events this year with my AR, but I'm missing a scope.
I've read somewhere that there are scope limitation to 4x magnification.
Is that true?
What are people using generally? fixed or variable?
And what scope is a good choice for around $200-300.

I put a HiLux M1000 on my AR for this year. 1.5-10X.

The Aussie uses the same recticle as the military Austrian STG77. It is a not a bad system to shoot at lockheed martin style pop ups within 200m. It means to be an optical sight that is easier (faster) to learn than an iron sight, not a sight designed to increase precision or better identify targets at 1.5X. It is a KISS design for the conscript army, which I think Austrian military was based on back in the 70's and 80's.
