So I have been thinking about this for awhile and thought it would make for an interesting and fun debate.

At what point do you go from being a normally kitted out gun-guy to full-on gear whore/range commando?

There are two areas to discuss - gear and guns

1. Gear - Personally I have always been a bit of a gear whore, both personally and in the army. I have gotten and continue to get lots of flack from 'minimilists' over my gear, especially in the army. If something new comes out and I can see how it could be appliable to my job, I might try it out. I have the income to do it and having after-market kit has never diminished my performance. I have a rule with my troops, if it's reasonable and cadpat, I am open to letting them use it. If a troop can't perform with issue kit I will not allow him to use after-market kit. Unfortunately a lot of troops who use after-market kit aren't the fittest dudes. That and the fact that most nay-sayers are cheap, contributes to the slagging. I don;t overdo it but if the issue kit isn't cutting it then I improve it. As for private shooting, I personally use a Battle Belt because it is comfortable and a simple plate carrier, only because I use armour in both my jobs so I like to train with it as much as possible.

2. Guns - There are those that feel the need to put every last aftermarket item on their guns and those that prefer plain jane, simple. Personally I like to upgrade my guns to improve ergonomics. But where does it end? If I just put a front grip and a MIAD grip on I'm 'ok' but if I have a rail, CTR, red dot, yada, yada, I'm a range commando? I believe you need to learn to shoot with the basics, iron sights, stock (I'm talking AR platform). Once you've mastered the irons, then move to optics, and comfort. I have seen many people with all the toys in the world on an AR but still can't group a 4" group at 50yds let alone 2"! If you can't get a tight group with optics and bipod, you need to go back to the basics. There is no point in learning to shoot on the move and do fancy turns and flips if you can't shoot prone. I know guys on my team that prefer iron sights for room entry over EoTechs, not sure why, but as long as they hit their mark, who cares. In A-Stan I used an old AK with irons, back home I prefer red dots. So if I want to put the latest Magpul or Troy or whatever gadget on my rifle, does that make me a range commando? Is that any different than the car dude who tricks out his ride with after-market goodies? Or is that different?

For me, I don't care what a dude has on their guns/gear, I look at their drills and shooting ability. If it is good or above-average, then who cares, if it totally sucks, I say, go work on the basics, master those then accessorize!!

Basics win the gunfight, not gadgets....however the right gadgets help well-trained shooters increase their odds in said gunfight.

Thoughts? Let's discuss....

LOL I find it's all about performance. Use what works and what you like, if other people's opinions are dictating your shooting choices, you're probably doing it for the wrong reasons. I get a kick out of anyone who criticizes another shooter over gear. Besided, as a civilian, the range is the only place I get to be a Commando. lol The Arnie version circa 1985.

What about if you stand around and discuss what the JTF/CAG/SEALS/SAS ar currently using as a mag pouch or talking about how is speeds up mag changes in a TIC when the only TIC they've seen is on YouTube.

Ok I'm looking for some feedback from KevinB, TheJudge, Sparrow, guys who are established shooters personal friends and current/former gear-whores!!! Come on, weigh in guys...

Is that you in this video by any chance? No offense but I would be embarrased to show up dressed like that - I didn't know they made tactical track suits. Is this combat training for the purpose of having the enemy die of laughter :D

If you actually use plates and other armor for work then I can see the train with what you use angle. But for regular civilians, armor is a major range commando/mall ninja flag. I also think that piles of gucci gear on your rifle is also major range commando/mall ninja. But seriously, it's all about training. If you need the stuff you're using at the range in competition or for work, then what's the big deal? Sometimes I feel like a goof wearing my vest with mag pouches to the range, but I need to practice using the stuff in competition, so I bring it along anyway.

Well if you do competitions like 3 gun, IPSC, tac matches, courses then you need some way to carry extra gear. Does a guy need 10-15 mags? Probably not but he does probably need the ability to carry 3-5.

I'm not familiar with 3 gun or IPSC/IDPA, but in tac shooting/courses, you should have a small personal first aid kit on you as well. TO me filling up the MOLLE with pouches just because it's there is excessive.

I use a vest with 3 double mag pouches and a dump pouch for the range. Anybody who wants to call me a mall ninja for that , have fun pulling mags out of your pockets. The vest with mag pouches is all about practical.

sorry but guys who wear full digital cammo, armour (other then if they use it for work), carry tac knives and lights (during a daylight shoot) and worry about all their gear being the same colour

I dunno. I would consider wearing a light vest to the range for the sake of safety. You never know. Full BDU's and a helmet...... that's a bit extreme for someone who's gonna go sit in an office for 8 hours. It's a free country though, so if some guy wants to wear his kneepads and elbow pads to the range, whatever. It'll just hurt less if someone pushes him over.

Did you set it up and pack it to carry 15 different firearms and ammo, lights, knives, NV, etc for taking on the zombie hordes that are coming, or did you pack it because you have to be able to carry it and live with it all day?
Does it weight more than you?
Does it have hydration? Do you actually use it if it does?
Are there empty pounches on it or did you have to find stuff to put in them to justify having it? Do you really use the pouches that are on it?
Did you stand in front of a mirror to check it or did you try it in different positions to see if there is interference? Can you get into each of the pouches or are there other pouches in the way?
Did you get anything from an Airsoft catalog?
Did you try to match it with the gear on COD4?

If the stuff was all bought for you, and you are getting 25$ or more an hour to wear it, you are not a range commando.
