Sparrow, you'll always be my special little Blackwater shooter wanna-be!!!!!!!!! But I will always have your back and shoot with you anyday!!!!!!
I fully expect to be standing beside you on the Magpul course next spring, along with MK and Judge...

I hate to quote Yeager, but in this case he's 100%:

1. Mindset
2. Skill
3. Tactics
4. Gear

In that order........like I said, I am all for cool-guy stuff, I buy the newest gadgets, etc however I make sure I can shoot, move, and communicate..

I'll agree with the gear being at the bottom of the list, but Physical fitness has to slide in somewhere as well. If you aren't fit, you simply can't shoot, move, communicate well if at all under stress.

To me a Range Commando is someone who thinks that they can BUY performance.

Being able to perform means your brain is switched on, you're agile, strong, can shoot, you know what and WHEN to do it, and you've got your kit setup functionally. You can't buy those things at the store.

I think it nests directly with 'skill'

Big fat guys can often shoot extremely well within the confines of a range. But I like the analogy of the jet fighter vs the skybus. Both could be rigged with the latest and greatest in gizmos and missiles.

...But only one is actually a fighter.

Haha , post not directed at you I was just quoting for the first part.

I hope we don't hurt One Shot or Dave's sales with these revelations!

Mindset does jack #### when as Big_Red points out your are not fit to fight.

You need to have the physical and mental toughness to apply your skills, the knowledge and experience of when to apply those skills as well.

While everyone likes being able to make a list, and check the box, life does not fit that way at all.

Agreed, the second you begin to worry about your own comfort and convenience, the job goes out the window.

That's why I like to go to the range and train in the winter...

1. Adverse conditions = mental toughness/intestinal fortitude

2. Usually no one else is around so I can do whatever drills I want without interference

I find I do not have to wait until winter because rainy days usually mean empty ranges where I live. Range commando's don't seem to like getting their gear wet. 99.9% of the time if there is some rain the range is empty. I don't really care if someone wants to shoot all outfitted in tactical gear and/or body armour, that is their business. But I only ever see guys with all the gear on sunny days. Just my perspective.

Which one?, the AAR I sent you or the one written by USMC03???

Well, mine would probably help a lot of people on here too, but I did mean the USMC03 write up.

Actually, you are welcome to also post the email you wrote me after the course, it might help others. I do think a thing or two should be edited, but I'll leave that to you.

Threads like this make me glad I come on CGN. CGN is not LF, but we do have quality discussions here once in a while.

And thats why tactical nylon and the latest in tac clothing should not come in ######L. I wear medium plates, and thats plenty enough coverage for a guy 5'10 180lbs.

offtopic a little, but the last time I was in Walmart, I heard over the loudspeaker, "We now over Extra Extra Large sizes in all kids clothing"

I'm not sure if they make big size clothing to capture the market, or if they make big size clothing so that it gives people the excuse to get obeser.

I would love to head to the range in a cadpat bunny suit!

As far as range commando's go, I agree with the opinion that as long as people practice safety with the firearms and nobody gets hurt they should be able to wear whatever they want. I have seen a couple people dressed like Sgt Sugarcookie, if thats what they like then so be it.
Personal preference is no speedos at the line however!

Does wearing ACUs (not for camo purposes but more for utility, i like pockets) when shooting make me a range commando? I don't have the uber cool black/green/red rifle (though I want) or the HSLD vest (though they look like they could work), so I think I'm exempt :p

I always wonder how mind can overcome matter if your body just cannot defy physics - I think some of the firearms trainers in the US had mastered Jedi mindtricks! :p

Got beaten to it.......

There are lots of (mentioned earlier) "big fat guys" with big fat wallets.

It makes perfect sense that some mention fitness... To me this is everything! If your fat and obese or skinny and under weight gear should be the last box to check off... I am not a fitness guru, I'd say I'm average, at 6'2" 230.. I'm not fat, my height attributes to alot of my weight. That being said my goal is to shed about 20 pounds give or take, but mostly to increase my stamina. Instead of buying gear, I bought an elliptical trainer. My mindset is WHEN #### hits the fan I want to be able to protect my family and myself. To insure this, fitness plays a major role, being obese and slow is a major fail, no matter what your gear or shooting skill. I also believe that if you're physically fit, mental toughness follows suit to a certain degree. SO? whats a poser to me... A fat obese guy all suited up for WW3.... when it comes right down to it, this type is completely useless... My checklist... 1. Shooting Skills 2. Fitness 3. Gear... but hey, this is just my opinion...

I wear ACUs all the time... they're cheap, comfortable and durable.

Even if you're fit, and you still take up ALL the MOLLE pals, you're still a moron. Mind you, I wouldn't say it to your face. Those who ##### about tactical range commandos should take a look at the cowboy action shooting guys. AFAIK they dress up even more, but nobody ever busts their balls. Just trying to help deflect the hurt.

(I once did a 3gun in my tactical flipflops read:merrel sandals - you're not an uber operator range commando if you can't do this)

The difference is Cowboy action shooters know they are engaged in a game with a huge social aspect to it, they are also (the ones I have met) of exceptional demeanor. We seem to have more than our fair share of 500lb Grumpy Snipers come Socom Operators who have a hard time differentiation fact from fiction...just sayin'...How come we don't have a fitness section on this board?.

I shot CFASC/NSCC in shorts and flip flops -- the run down sucked a bit.

I'm 210 lbs these days - I run in the mornings but admittedly not as long as I should, plus I love Ice Cream...

I agree with Ray - there should be a fitness section.
