What range for pistol shooting

If you can’t shoot good group at 25 yards, you do not know how to shoot. Shooting at 10-15 may make you feel good, but that all.
Proficiency come with practice and 25 yards will show you your mistakes way more than 10 yards.

So I got my first handguns during the panic buy and because my nearest range is a 4 hour round trip I’ve only been shooting them 3 times so far and I’ve got a noob question for you all.
What range distance should I be shooting handguns at? My local range is setup for rifle and the nearest target is 25 yards but if no one’s around I sometimes move it closer to about 10 yards, ( I’ve asked and no one seems to mind as long as I don’t beat anything up) i sight in most of my rifles at 25 and 100 yards and I’m wondering what distance I should get into pistol training, one day I’d like to try IPSC and cowboy action, possibly 3 gun, any advice is appreciated

Start at 15 and then back to 25 yards. and someone said in another post it's possible to make a head shot with a Beretta 92F at 50 yards ? they would be my hero . that would take a absolute ton of practice. and in a tense situation you had better be named dead eye to make a shot like that. the police are armed with AR15 rifles and shotguns in most states . buddy would have to be a complete moron to go after a guy with an AK with a 9mm unless that's all he had . I've heard of guys shooting 45 pistols at 50 yards at our range but I couldn't be bothered to even try . and I've been shooting for over 35 years at a range . happy shooting on the Rock . stay away from the Screech before you go . LOL .

I had a Beretta 92F in the late 1980's, probably '88 and '89 just before moving to Mexico. I also used a couple down there shooting at 100 yard plates. It's an accurate enough gun in single action. My own Beretta 92fs is quite accurate also. This 5-shot group was fired from the bench at the Oliver range at 25 yards using my own reload of an MP-Molds 135 grain RNFP bullet powdercoated with Eastwood Ford Light Blue over 4.1 grains of WW231. It is not a "Wow!" group but good enough for what I want to do. This is on a standard PPC Target Center patch.

Now, this 5-shot group was shot one-handed "Bullseye Style" standing immediately afterwards at 25-yards taking my own sweet time. I was quite proud of it. It showed me that the Beretta can perform. My SA trigger is quite nice, I installed the M*Carbo Beretta 92fs Spring Kit that I got off of Calgary Shooting Center and my SA pull is just a tad under 3.0 pounds and crisp. This was the only group I tried shooting Bullseye style, it was so pleasing I just moved on from here.

So then I moved to 50. This is the same size of PPC center, and I fired again "over the bench". 10 shots this time, and a score of 94/100. I think I gave myself no time limit to do the 10 shots. If we call the white zone a human face then 5 of the shots were a done-deal. Another 2 of the shots would have caused a potential neck wound and/or a scalp would or helmet-rim hit. 2 other shots might have shaved off an ear or a lobe. Only one shot would almost certainly missed. That's fine.

I realize this is "perfect day" shooting without being fired upon myself, but taking the Sherriff's Deputy position, I would also not have fired unless the man with the AK was not looking at me and not aiming to engage me. Even then, I might not fire -- or maybe I would. I know the gun could make the shot, and I could make the shot -- and the instant fame a good hit would bring me would be something to consider. A concrete parking stantion is a significant barrier, and 50 yards is probably beyond hand grenade range: so maybe. I realize some people would certainly be panicky but the few times I have been shot close to, I had good cover and was not particularly frightened. It's always hard to say for sure, but I think I would be fine. If I found I was not, I could simply choose not to engage -- as did the Deputy. But the gun is certainly capable of it. I never tried exactly this type of group with my Beretta 92F back 35 years ago, but I think it would have been fine with any decent ammo.

My 5-inch 1911 back in San Miguel might have grouped just a little better that these examples -- or maybe not. The Beretta impressed me for a simple off-the-rack service gun with a spring kit installed. I dumped a small fortune into my SMAGTO 1911 -- the Beretta I picked up on a trade and installed a spring kit. One of those things that make you go "Hmmmmmm". It's certainly solid enough performance for me, personally. Dedicated PPC shooters will snicker, perhaps. Or maybe not.

Not everybody an expert, or into full blown target shooting. Best to learn the basic with your grip and other fundamentals at a lesser distance. Then shotgun pattern at 25 and get discouraged.

I would not worry about distance till you got use to what ever gun you are using 10 yrs is fine.
then move target out when you get some time shooting. If you spread the shots all over the target , not much point in moving back, yet.
GOOD coaching is a huge help, if you can find some one.
I have been shooting pistols for close to 70 yrs and had no one to show me.
I have shoot at 100 yrs off hand and can usually keep it on the paper. But most are at 22-25 yrs.
I don't shoot enough these days, but the old eyes still work good. My main gun is a 4 in 357/38 model 19 smith, But have shoot target 22's for yrs.
A 4 hrs drive would be tough, I had a 20 ft walk up till last few yrs , 15min drive now.

Don't sweat the distance and don't expect to shoot tight groups at first, go out and have fun, 5 yds is fine if that works for you or 10-15 yds .
I would shoot at old 2x4's cut into squares at what ever distance I felt like. usally 40 ft.
