Hello,
I want to sight in my .22, but I'm not sure which distance to sight it in for. I realize for bigger rifles you generally start with 100yards, how does that translate to .22 ?
I was thinking 50 yards because that's pretty much the limit for my eyes with open sights and I will never put a scope on this rifle.

I have a Henry lever with an Octagonal barrel. Open buckhorn sights. I will be using CCI Mini-Mags to sight the rifle in.

Thanks in advance.

For open sights and iffy eyes~I'd start about about 20-25 yards. On a side note, I've read that some guys upgrade the sights on their Henry's to Skinner sights. Might be worth considering.

My answer to aging eyes is "optics on everything" but my BRNO 2E has such nice sights I've left that one scope-less.

I usually sight most of mine to be on at about 12 yards and 75 yards.

Forgot the exact trajectory but if you do that the bullets path crosses the sight line going up at 12y, is 2.5 inches high around 50y and crosses the sight line going down at about 75y.
Check the ballistic chart for your particular ammo and experiment.

I will be upgrading to Skinner in the future, but for the time being it's buckhorns. I won't be doing optics because I'm stubborn and I like the classic look of the rifle. Just looking for a good starting point. I'm guessing, I should sight it in to what my eyes allow at this point ?

Would CCI have that on their site ? That's a good idea.

Definitely. Beyond about 50-60 yards, standard velocity 22 ammo really starts to dip anyway, and, if there are issues with the sights it ought to be easier to see/catch from a closer distance. For me, with new guns, I start with a good sized white board...and shoot them from pretty close...opening-up that distance once I know things are ticking along the way they should. I also use a rest to sort this out so that any issues going forward are definitely me. :) Same plan whether it's an open-sight, OR a scoped gun.

As for the drop~I shoot standard velocity ammo most and honestly...never trust the charts. I bring a range finder, and sort things out on my own. For better or for worse. :)

I sighted in my henry small game carbine at 25 yards. The skinner sight is a huge upgrade over the stock sight, you'll be happy you upgraded.

My CZ 455 fs with a 1-4x Leupold is sighted in for 50 yards

I use 50 yards. With HV ammo, the 25 and 50 yard POI are essentially identical, and you can shoot without any correction from 20 to 60 yards.

depends on the gun.
my plinkers and gopher shooters i do at 25m either scoped or non scoped as that is MY effective range with a 22 out in the field.

for my paper punchers i put them in at 50m because they all have optics on them.
