What red dot for AR

If you're closing one eye for any amount of time with a reddot you're doing it wrong. Practice consistently mounting the rifle and "finding" the dot becomes a non issue.

I ran Eotech for years on all my rifles. it is super tough I had and EXPS-2 on my 870 hiking shotgun for over 2 years; it got dropped down banks and brushed against trees and rocks and never once broke. With that said I just sold all of my EoTechs. I put a Vortex StrikeFire II (Aimpoint copy) on my 10/22; it was all the gun store had so I put it on. I loved it; I have not gone to Aimpoint, but I have went back to the ELCAN which in 1x is very similar to an Aimpoint; i like it more because you can use it without batteries.

1. doesn't work without the battery. Yes, the T1 batteries last 5 years, but if something happened to the circuitry or the battery, you're hooped.
2. no magnification.

I highly recommend one of the 1-4 scopes with red dot, like the Bushnell Elite 1.25-4 with 4A illuminated reticle. At 1.25, it's functionally the same as the more expensive T1, but it will work with the red dot turned off, and has magnification when you need it. It's just sensible economics. Especially for a 223 semi-auto that has long reach, why waste the money on a short range optic? IMO, the T1 and other x1 red dots are for shot guns and other short range guns.

I don't like the idea of removing a CQB scope to install a long range scope, I like my scopes to never come off the rifle.

People have been concistently hitting at upwards of 300 yards with 4 MOA dots.

This! before I was able to afford my aimpoint, I bought a bushnell TRS-25 (AR optics) with the high mount for my AR. I beat the crap out of it for 6 months, hoping it would malfunction and force me to upgrade. It took the abuse and kept on going. I keep it now as a backup red dot. The damn thing seems near indestructible.... and im NOT a fan of "budget" optics, so, this is saying alot coming from me! lol
 
I think I am kind of leaning towards the Eotech XPS as it's smaller then the 552 and has an easier dot to pick up by the sounds of it then the Aimpoint. It seems pretty split down the middle between Eotech and Aimpoint, with the Aimpoint having a smaller dot.
 
I shoot in CQB matches frequently. Started out with a SPARC and VMX3 pairing. It was pretty good for the money. As I got better I decided to move up to an EoTech 512 (I have a mono upper, so lots of rail. AA batteries are cheaper and easier to source, and I certainly don't do much with NVGs anymore) and EoTech G22 magnifier. I've also handled and shot a lot of comrades rifles with Aimpoints.

I prefer the EoTech reticle with the 65 MOA circle and 1 MOA dot. I find it much faster to pick up than the single dot of the SPARC or Aimpoint. With practice I quickly learned to use the outer ring for holdover during the many quick close shots required by competition.

I have both t1 and exps and the t1 is a lot smaller and more compact with better battery life. I do like the eotech reticle better though. Honestly you can't go wrong with either.
 
Also consider both Eotech and Aimpoint have excellent warranty. I bought my Eotech in 2008. Sent it in for repair 2013. All I had to pay was for shipping there and back, no charge for repairs. I understand Aimpoint is equally as good.
 
I have three different model Eotech sights on three different rifles now. All have been flawless. I tried the Aimpoint T1 but I just found it slower to aim. I recently put Trijicon RMR's on two of my Glock slides and I am now considering how they would do on a rifle.

I have the ACOG w/rmr and I really like it, I have it set on my ACR now but I had it on my 11.5" AR for a while before putting the T1 on it.
 
Well after looking into it a little bit more I seen that Eotech's warranty is only 2 years, which isn't that great.. and Aimpoint's is limited to the original owner, which kind of sucks because I was planning on getting one of the EE and saving a few dollars.

Does anyone know how long the Aimpoint warranty is if you buy new? From the looks of the website it sounds like it's a pain in the ass to deal with them if something happens anyways.

Don't overthink it, you won't need it. Aimpoints don't #### the bed, that's EOTech's business.

Valid point, I've never met anyone with an Aimpoint warranty issue - and really, we should expect these things to work. As Chris Osman said - "lifetime warranty, what's that worth on a parachute - like 45 seconds? and if it fails do you get a new one, or your money back"

Like I said, I bought my Eotech 2008. Sent in for repair 2013. All I paid was for shipping. I didn't need to provide a bill of original purchase. I emailed Eotech and they gave me a repair reference number/authorizatin to include with my unit when I sent it in, and that was it. All they wanted was the serial number on the Eotech unit. My experience was A+ and would buy an Eotech again.

I have an Aimpoint also and I like it too. I don't think you can go wrong with either.
