I'd like to pick up a proper rest for shooting the online matches (the 50 yard and 100 yard benchrest matches in this forum). I have been shooting my NEF 17HMR using a car scissor jack as a front rest. I beleive this is less than ideal, but cheap and practical none the less....

As I'll be in the US in 2 weeks on vacation (and shopping), I was thinking of picking up a rest or shooting bags. I have no idea what to get though... Was thinking of one of these. Anyone have recommendations?

Or is there any advantage to using bags over a full rest? I am thinking the full rest is better because fron and rear are connected. Also, the recoil is negligible on this rifle, so I don't think that a lead sled would be useful. The first one (Caldwell NXT) can be broken down so that the front can be used separately, I like that.

I would either use a front and rear bag, or a front adjustable rest and a rear bag. I've tried the one piece rests like a lead sled and I don't like them. The separate front rest and rear bag is more versatile in my opinion. If you don't mind carrying it, get the biggest heaviest front rest you can afford. Caldwell the rock comes to mind.

here is what a Wallymart USA front/rear bag (Allen brand) looks like with a 10/22, shoots well too (out doors of course!) I like the Cadwell one posted above, but never tried it. Hope it helps.

+1 for separate F & R rests. If at all possible get a front rest with a windage adjustable top. There are several good bags that can be used.
