I have a CZ 457 composite on the way and I'm trying to decide on a scope for it. Main use will be a plinker and grouse getter, but reaching out a little further appeals to me, hence the 12X. I've read a few old threads and I'm thinking about going with a Sightron SIH 4-12. So if I pull the trigger, what reticle should I get? Hunter Holdover or MOA-20?

I would say it is just personal preference. Both will most likely do the job.

Holdover reticle is simple to use, but the "holdover" markings may not necessarily correspond to your point of impact.

MOA reticle gives you a finer reference point at the cost of complexity. If you don't like using kentucky windage, this may be your reticle.

Hope this helps.

That Sightron scope reticle is good as are a number of others like the DOA Bushnell and whatever Weaver calls theirs.

Once sighted in with the ammo the rifle prefers then you can play around with the different stadia to get to say 100 yards/metres.

Or in reverse, sight in so the bottom stadia is for 100 yards/metres, then working in find the distance compatible with each stadia until the crosshair, point of aim and point of impact coincide.

A scope with a side focus or adjustable objective are worthwhile additions to the scope to remove some of the parallax issues that exist with a hunting scope (set for 150 yards) versus one for rimfire set at 75 yards.

The 20MOA reticle is quite busy and the one I played with was the Hunter Holdover. All of these scopes have adjustable objectives so you are on the right track.

How far is "a little further" ?

Grouse are usually less then 50 yards around here so not much need for holdover's maybe a slight hold under if it's real close.

I'd probably go for the MOA as it offers way more options for plinking long range as in "I wonder if I can make a hit at 300 yards".... :)

I'd suggest the MOA to let you adjust for any windage. I have a Savage B22 and I mounted a Bushnell Engage 6-18x50 MOA. The delineations allow for 'absolute' holdovers instead of DOA 'dots'. I have the DOA Bushnell 4-12x44 on my .223 and it's OK but I would say that for targets with the B22 I'm more in favour of the MOA. The DOA is fine for hunting but the MOA bars are better for targets, I think.
