Looking to downsize my Ruger GP100. Im looking for a smaller framed pistol then the GP100 that shoots .38 special only. New is nice but I will consider used as well. SS or blued doesn't matter to me. What are my options? Thanks for any tips.

Not too many new dedicated .38 specials out there that are Canadian legal. The small guns are short defence types, and anything bigger gets made in .357

Is double action your wish? There are several interesting single actions chambered in the special. I'm thinking of Colt 1870-1872 open tops, for starters.

You could get a S&W model 66. It's .357 but its a 4.25" K-frame. Quite small in size.

Otherwise a nice model 14 would get my vote as well. I don't have one yet myself, but I've shot them plenty

My Ruger SP 101, is been feed a diet of 148 gr HWC in 38 SPL, very precise , recoil very tame, very small revolver, great FO adj sight... JP.

Any K frame S&W will fit the bill neatly. And the Alfa Project revolvers are pretty much exactly that size. My Alfa fits in my K frame Smith holsters like it was an identical twin.

Extra marks for neatness go to options like pencil barrel Model 10's and half lug model 14's.

Handled a stainless 4.5" brl Alpha Project wheelgun in 9mm this weekend at the LGS.

Quite impressed.

If you like the Ruger, go with an older model, such as the Security Six; it has a smaller frame and is lighter in weight. They will also handle 357 mag ammo as well.

Do you care if it has fixed sights or target sights?

One of the nicest fixed sight small guns would have to be a Smith & Wesson 5 inch model 10. If you want nice and you need target sights then the model 14 would be the way to go but it would be a 6 inch barrel

There are lots of smaller 38 special guns but few if any would be nicer then the two S&W's that I mentioned.

Just my two cents worth.

Alpha Proj makes a 38spl that has an alloy frame rather than steel so it is lighter. If weight is a factor that might be one to look at.

No brainer, get a Ruger SP-101 .357, beautiful little revolver that can shoot .357 if you want to one day. Get the 10 pound hammer spring, 8 pound trigger return spring, and shims for the hammer...$15 and a bit of time, and you have a fantastic revolver. Do the same mods on your GP-100 if you haven't done so, you'll love the result.

Dedicated .38, depending on your budget and taste, a Smith K frame: Model 10, 15 or 14. Personally, I'd say look for a nice 14 recessed and pinned. They are the real deal, my best shooting of about 20 S&W.
