what revolver to buy?

can't be done unless you open yourself up to used- even the blackhawk runs 535- now if you were to go to 6or 7 now you can talk about a quality new

S&W Model 66-2. It's K-frame fits my smaller hands better than the N-frame.

I'd say the Smith 686. Its well made, has decent sights, action can be smoothed out and trigger lightened, and it is very accurate with 38spl loads. You are slightly low on the price range for a used one.

Depends what you want to do with it and what you like.

Without any other info I'd recommend based purely on versatility:
Single action: a Single Six .22 for plinking. Otherwise, you want a bigger caliber, a .357 Blackhawk.
Double action: A K17 or K22 are pretty nice .22's and cheap to feed. Otherwise, 586 or 686 S&W is hard to beat. Another good better are GP100's as they are built like tanks and last forever.

OK, i have no idea of price range for these...mabye a used ruger blackhawk can be purchased for that price range. also something in a double action as well. Just something as a starter revolver if there is such a thing. Something bigger than .22 as well.

My first thought was a Colt Python, but then I saw your price range... I would have to say go with a S&W 686. Buy used, or better yet save up 150-200$ more and buy a brand new one.

You can plink with .38 special all day long, and then let loose with a box or two of .357 for fun. No sense buying a .22 or .44 revolver if you have to limit yourself to just one wheelgun.

I purchased a used Taurus 66 stainless .357 for 300$, excellent accuracy gets a couple of thousand rounds a year with no problems. Hard to beat that deal...

A good used 686 will between $550-$600 depends on condition. Save some more starbuck money and get a good one.

Trigun

I agree with Trigun. This is the smartest option. Good trigger, reliable, and one of the standard workhorses while not being bad-looking. Seen some 586 and 686 lately for around $600.
