It is definitely off a mauser 98. Possibly FN manufactured. Any markings on it? Not off a k98, they have a rim or flange on the front to hold the handguard down.
It was on my 98 but is not the right one, the proper one I have now has the lip for the hand guard as mentioned. Hmmm still wondering, no marks on it at all.
Flip up the sight and look underneath it for markings. Sometimes the markings are right near the hinge part and may be hard to see. VZ 24, early German contract rifles, etc., all have this style of rear sight.
The "Z in a circle" could mean the rear sight came off a Czech made VZ-24 for export ? The hole in the front of the rear sight base is for a screw that would help secure the hand guard. You also see this similar pattern on FN made Mausers.
Are there any markings on the bottom of the rear sight, perhaps a serial number ? Sometimes the style of the numbering or even a small mark can assist in identification.
x2. The circled Z is a Czech stamp. This sight looks very similar to the one on my postwar tgf 50. It could be off an export Czech K98k (DDR, Israel etc). Any other marks?
