Hello all!

I'm new on this site. Glad to have found some canadian resources!

I am in the market for a new rifle for target shooting at the range. I have a lot of hunting rifles but I want a dedicated one for that purpose.

I think of a 1000-1500$ rifle excluding the scope.

Here are the models I have in mind... Any comments would be appreciated!

- Remington 700 5R milspec (seems interesting in terms of precision, it is somewhat rare also and the 700 model seems to be a model that has made it's proofs!

- Savage 12 F/TR (Im am a little bit confused in that line of models. At first I was looking at the 12 palma but I want to shoot regular 308 win loads. From what I understand it is chambered in 308 palma so I would be restricted in bullet selection. This is why I was going for a 12 F/TR - or other from this line - model).

- Tikka T3 tactical

- Tikka T3 Super Varmint

The last two are about on par for me... but the price for those is a little high...

I love the accutrigger from the savages

I like the fact that the 5r Milspec is somewhat rare

The scope that will be fitted on one of those (or other, I'm opened to suggestions), is a Bushnell elite 6500 4.5-30x50mm.

Any suggestions or comments?

Thanks!

Marck

If you love the Savage Accutrigger you'll really love the target accutrigger.

I would pick up a M12 f-class or bench rest. Depending on the shooting you wish to do. My f-class is in 6br. Its a great shooter.

Edit: keep in mind you don't see the Savage M12 target rifles every day either.

Read my friend, read.

Use the search function to look up each of those rifles. Use the search function to look up scopes (check out Sightron for the price of your Elite 6500). Use the EE to find stuff like custom builds at very reasonable prices. Then you'll be doing the same for handloading, bedding, ballistics, etc.

There is enough stuff on here to keep you reading for weeks.

I also say read because this type of thread pops up every week.

The Savage Palma rifle in chambered in .308 Win. Any .308 win round that you could fire from the F/TR could be fired from the Savage Palma Rifle. The Savage Palma model is designed for shooting prone with a jacket and sling with iron sight all the way out to 1000 yards. In competition terms this class is known as Target Rifle. (aka Palma rifle)
You could also scope this rifle and shoot it as an F Class rifle off a rest. This is known as F/TR class.

The F/TR model is designed to shoot prone off a rest with a scope. It would be a poor choice to try to shoot Target Rifle class (aka Palma rifle) with it.

I couldn't agree more, there is tons of good info to soak up here. Not to happy with the bushnell, sold mine , crosshairs too thick for long range ,glass is kinda krummy. If you choose a 5R milspec they are a fine rifle i love mine but you can build/buy better/same for about the same price. shop around!

I do a lot of research on several boards.

On the other hands, I'm pretty sure that the guy who would invent a discussion board where it is easy to do searches and that the results are relevant to the search that was done would be quite popular...

I ordered the 6500 over the other scopes that were proposed to me because it was 400$ less then the cheapest one. I was looking at the sightron, leupold vx3, nikon monarch, vortex viper pst.

Most of these scopes sells for around 1000-1200$ and I paid 700$ for the bushnell. I said to myself that I would give it a try and if I don't like it, I would use it on a smaller rifle (like a 223 or something else). I thought that with a minimum zoom of 4.5 it would serve me well for coyote hunting.

I emailed a local shop and they have all the models that I'm interested in stock. I will probably go for a drive friday to see that...

Thanks!

I have one :) love it. Now if I could just hit what I shoot at :(

If you want steady performance, you should only use a single shot rifle. This allows the entire bottom of the action to be bedded and the action is quite a bit stiffer. Don't forget you are hanging a heavy barrel on it.

I have some Remington 40X 308 rifles for sale. $800 will buy you one with a good custom barrel, bedded in a Robertson fibrglass stock.

I suggest you research 40X if you are considering a Remington.

Hi, I am new to the LR shooting and spoke to several shooters and did a lot of research on line and made a decision and just picked up a Savage 12 F/TR .308 with 30" stainless steel barrel and a Bushnell Elite tactical 4.5-30X50 MD Scope and very excited to try it out soon. Any comments and advise is appreciated. Where do you guys go or meet to shoot around GTA or nearby?? how to do you post a Picture?

Hey welcome to the Savage club, I am sure you will be happy with your FTR. Get the rings lapped before installing the scope though.

Hi all!

I finally made my choice:

Savage 12 Bench rest in 308 caliber
Warne pica tinny rail
Arma Lite 1 piece mounts
Nightforce benchrest 8-32x56 scope.

Thanks for your comments!
