What Rifle is Going BIG GAME hunting?

Most hunting a 336 35 Rem. otherwise I'll use either a

1939 deluxe win 71 with 255 gr. Cast or if i am going long range I;ll

take the Browning 71 348 with 220 X bullets .

For back-up I have a 1925 Mauser 30-06 with double triggers full manlicher

stock in new BC maple..with org. iron sights

Scopes are out for this year...

Well usually would have been Remington 742 in 3006 for moose and Ruger 96/44 in 44 mag for deer, but I bought a couple of new toys so it'll be Savage 99E in 308 for moose and Savage 99EG in 300 Sav for deer. Black powder deer season will be a T/C White Mountain carbine 50cal.

SO, what rifle (s) are going hunting this year for BIG GAME?
Well, Gate my man, Thor's Hammer will be touring the Kootenays as long as elk and moose are also open:

That be a Husqvarna Lightweight in .358 Norma Magnum. Light as a maiden's caress - until you pull the trigger and launch one of those 250 grain Barnes-X's at 2880 fps.

Once it's just Little Critter season again (i.e. sheep, goats, deer), then its' twin baby brother in 30/06 will be taking to the hills.

And I'll probably fool around on short hunts within a few minutes of the house trying to assassinate a deer with either my grandfather's Winchester 1895 in 30/40 Krag with cast bullets, or my BP muzzlestuffer in .54 caliber.

For deer this year, I am using a sporterized Swedish Mauser in 6.5 x 55, scoped with Timney trigger. I will be using Nosler 125gr and 41.5grs IMR 4350.

I bet it doesn't feel like a maiden's caress when you pull the trigger!!! Get a recoil pad for this thing! OUCH!!!:D

It shoves pretty good -but it doesn't hurt unless you don't pull the butt into your shoulder.

Besides, recoil pads and dragon calls on rifles are for girlz.

Seriously, it fits... which makes all the difference in the world. There is no doubt in my mind that the biggest factors with recoil are proper stock fitting and how you hold the rifle. The .358 was the only one that Husqvarna didn't put open sights on; the others have them. A couple of shots with the .308 and "mild" ammunition, using the iron sights, left me begging for mercy - the stock dimensions which are perfect for that scope just beat the holy crap out of my face when I scrunch down to peer through the irons.

I've never quite understood the fear of recoil relating to larger rifles in North America. I knew a lot of people who grew up in rural South Africa at one time, and many of them learned to shoot with a .375 H&H or similar rifle and never thought much of it one way or another. In Canada, I've watched guys who would put a whole box of heavy magnum shells through a light 12 gauge back when you could still use lead shot, then talk about how hard "magnum" (or whatever) rifles kick. Do the math on the recoil, and you'll find a lot of those light Winchesters, Ithicas, etc were putting out even more recoil than this .358 Norma does.

Anyways, if the recoil did bother me, the branded Husqvarna buttplate would come off and a recoil pad would go on. But it doesn't. I did, however, have the stocks fitted to me by going to Martin Hagn and have some stockwork done to adjust dimensions.

I am not an iron man, incidentally - my brother's idea of an elk rifle is one of Mr. Ruger's single shots in .416 Rigby, using 110 grains of RL22 (I think) to drive a 325 gr. bullet at just about 2900 fps. That thing HURTS... even though it seems to fit just fine.

If it's open country, then it's the accumark 270 weatherby with 140 grain hornady hand rolled. For the short shots it'll be the #1 45 70 with 500 grain. Still waiting for the other #1 270 wby, so won't be using it this fall.

For Deer, .257 Roberts in Rem. Mod. 722. For Moose, 30-06 Rem. Mod 760. For backup #4 Mk.1 Long Branch .303 (Not Bubba'd). Scopes on the Remingtons, not on the Long Branch.
