Just wondering if anyone knows if there are any readily available hunting rifles available in.338 Lapua magnum (not PGW, I don't have $7,500) and if .338 Lapua magnum is different from .338 Winchester magnum. I did find a Tikka T3 Varmint in .338 Win Mag

.338 Lapua is faster than .338win. Simply due to cost, however, I don't consider it a hunting cartridge. Similar performance comes from a .338 RUM, and you don't have to sell your soul to get the brass (roughly $1 a piece I think, corrections?) the win mag and Wby mag cartridges are both belted, the Lapua and RUM are not. You'll definitely find the win mag easier on the shoulder though.

PS. If any of this is incoherent, I'm tired and I'm going to bed. Good Night

Well Sako chambers their TRG-S model in .338 Lapua. Although, these rifles don't seem to be readily available. I bought mine from Goble's in London, ON, last winter. At the time I wasn't searching for one, but had always had my eye out for something in that chambering, so I bought it. I'm glad I did, its a great moose rifle as things turn out :D

338 Lapua as mentioned is a more powerful cartridge then the 338 Win Mag. Think 250 gr bullet at 2960 fps (26" bbl) vs. 250 gr bullet at 2650 fps (which is typical of actual 338 Win Mag velocities from a 24" bbl). Be aware that factory Lapua ammo only pushes that 250 gr bullet at 2750 fps though. I too shoot a Sako TRG-S, good rifles, except I don't care for the recoil lug set up. They are heavy, but in this cartridge that's a good thing. As mentioned, the RUM will give you the same performance level at much less expense, but it doesn't have the "rep" of the Lapua cartridge. I don't know if Sako is still making the TRG-S anymore, I haven't seen one in a shop in a long time. Ballistically speaking, the Lapua is pretty much the same as the 340 Wby (yes, I have one of those too), it should be faster due to case capacity, but I haven't found that to be the case in the real world. FWIW - dan

"....338 Lapua magnum is different from .338 Winchester magnum..." Yep and both are horrendously expensive to shoot. The Lapua even more so. Neither is required to hunt anything.

The TRG-S has not been in production since the early 90's. I have one, although its not chambered in .338 Lapua. I'd love to get the .338 LM, even though I could probably not afford to shoot it and it is probably way overkill for hunting. Must be that reputation.

I have a .338 Win Mag and, as far as knock-em-down power, it is all the gun I'll ever need. Of course my 7mm Remington Mag. will do fine, it's just not as impressive.

Spoken like a true "armchair" hunter :p I use my .338WinMag for all my moose/elk/grizzly (drew 2 grizzly leh's) hunting. Can't beat heavy bullets at high velocity for long range penetration on heavy game. Perhaps a .338/378 would be even better
