Simple. What round do you shoot in your Ruger 10/22 and why?

I just picked up a 10/22 yesterday and I'm looking for input as to what ammo to use in it. I'm looking for a round that will be good for fairly long distance gopher popping, and grouse hunting. Maybe some longer distance target shooting, too.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Tanner

CCI Stinger or Velocitor are what I use for longer distances & vermin. These are Hyper Velocity and are very consistant. They always work well in my 10/22. For every day plinking, I now almost always use Bulk Winchester 333 or 555 High Velocily HP.

CCI Stinger or Velocitor. Alrighty, I'll keep em in mind and check out some prices on 'em.

I'm sure this topic has been covered before, I appologize...

Thanks AWOL

Buy a box of each and see which groups the best! Every gun will like something different, and even 2 of the same gun might have a different preference.

What do I use? CCI Blazer!

Hollow points dont really expand anyway but the Winchester High Velocity Hollow points are pretty accurate outta my 10/22, but not as reliable.

So, pretty much stick with CCI? Buy a 50 box of Blazer, Stinger and Velocitor and see how they group?

How far are you guys reaching out, accurately with your 10/22s?

I am not sure what model of 10/22 that you have; however, I do believe that the target model's manual cautions against the use of the CCI Stinger due to the length of the cartridge and the chamber dimensions of the target model. I am not sure what model of 10/22 that you have, but I bring it to your attention in case you have the target model.

Chizzy

Right, I forgot about the Stinger ammunition. I do have the 10/22 Target. Somehow just didn't remember that Stingers shouldn't be used in them! :bangHead:

2 inches at 100 is normal for my 10/22 target tactical. 1 1/2 is common with the occassional group of about 1 inch. This is all using Blazer so I imagine with some better more consistant ammo there would be some more consistant groups.

Actually, I end up using whatever my other rimfires don't like. My dead stock 10 22 will feed anything, so I end up using it as my fun gun/garbage disposal. Yet another reason to love the 10 22.

This...

Whatever my MKII TR wouldn't group well with got put a side for the 10/22. In haste I bought a box of stingers and thunderbolts and decided they weren't going through the TR. But I put them through the 10/22 so they got used.

Mine is simply a plinker and eats anything so I have no preference and usually buy the winchester 333's or 555's @ walmart since their nice and cheap.

Gonna go into town tomorrow and get several boxes of different types. I'll pick up some Velocitor, Blazer, Winchester 333 and 555s. I'll also grab some paper targets and hit the range. Should have an update with some pics on Tuesday (if someone doesn't need an ambulance and I actually get to shoot at the range :) ...).

I'm sure I'll figure it out tomorrow. I'll probably just get boxes of 50 and a 500 of some Winchester. What yardage increments should I go for at the range? 25, 50, 100? Thinking of sighting in dead on at 50...

Suggestions? I've never sighted in a .22... Only a .243 and .308, both for 1" high at 100, so I dono what I should sight my .22 in for.

I'll most likely be doing grouse hunting with it for this year, and gophers next spring/summer. I know that most grouse shots are like 30 yards.. but it would be nice to reach out and (maybe) touch one.
