What Russian hunting rifle is based on Kalashnikov?

I was watching the "Long Way Round" last night and while the guys are getting a ride with big 4x4 trucks across eastern Siberia in spring freshet time, the truck drivers jump out with those semi-auto Russian hunting rifles, I think they are kind of half way between the sniper rifle in 7.62 Russian and an AK47, and they shoot this pathetic little brown bear cub for the hide and gall bladder.

What is that rifle?

I don't know much about them, but aren"t the Valmets based on Kalishnikov action? (I think basically the same as the AK)

I saw that as well, and I believe that was a Tigr.

BTW harvesting that bears parts will mean a better quality of life for that hunters family...they ain't exactly rolling in money in those parts, and it's a pretty hard life.

The Obi wan actor (Ewan) ivory tower comments about it the situation really put me off the rest of the show, and series. Sounds like his friend was more realistic about the situation.

The river crossing in the truck was pretty crazy...

+1 Vodogray
AFAIK Berkut has nothing to do with AK also.
And it's widely known as very troublesome rifle.

It looked like the driver had a Tigr. There was another episode where some they were at some mafia guys house and he had a ppsh-41 and some kind of modernized AK with black plastic furniture.

I agree, I only saw the gun briefly too, but it didn't seem to have any kind of pistol-grip-thumbhole stock. More like the one above.

And I don't care what the excuse is, economic or otherwise, I find the killing of wild animals for their parts only, well, galling.

I could argue that for economic reasons I need to sell bear parts too, but I'm glad we have a ban on in B.C.

Until you live in these other countries (I have worked in the Russia arctic for 4 years), don't be too quick to judge the actions of others. It's pretty easy for us to forgo the money we could make by harvesting bear gall bladders. It wouldn't make a difference to the quality of our lives or the lives of our families. We have an amazing health care system, an honest judiciary and the ability to get ahead if we work hard and work smart.

Raising a family in rural Russia where the declining population has meant living with a great decline in government services (post Soviet) ranging from health care, education and basics like central heating and running water and sewers.

If a guy can get a month's salary by harvesting a bears gall bladder in conditions like this, it's pretty hard for him to say no.

We are so privileged to live in Canada where most of our basic needs are easily met.

I have seen many heart breaking situations in Russia where our employees have sick or injured children and can't afford to fly them to get decent medical care. We usually raise the money amongst the expats and then get them flown to Magadan or Moscow.

That is very true, but anyone whos' never lived in a third world country wouldn't know much about it except for the ads they see on TV and Charlize Theron asking for money to help save the dogs in Africa......give me a break... ppl come first !

SVD based:

Tigr (comes in 7.62x54R, 308 and 9.2 x something round)

AK based:

Saiga

RPK based:

Izmash makes a really nice bolt action now that if someone imported would shoot less than 1moa and cost about 300$ with scope. As for the bear other than hide and gall bladder there is not much you can use a bear for. The meat is awfull. It's not like brown bears are endangered so I have no problem with it. I don't like using bait though.
