I am building a shorty m14 and am looking at puting a scope on it. I was looking at the NC star scopes with the slanted sun shade in 1.5-6 power. Not looking to spend a lot of money on it right now so they were right in the price range. They also look kinda neat. i have read a couple reviews and it didn't sound good. Are the NC star scopes junk? What else would be a good fairly inexpensive option with a similar tactical type look.

Unless its strictly for looks, I'd try to buy a decent quality scope that will hold zero. About the cheapest would be a Burris Fullfield II, low end Leupold, Redfield or Bushnell 3200 series. If the scope won't hold up, its going to be an exercise in frustration. Standard profile scopes were some of the earliest scopes used on M14's, so just consider it nostalgic looking.

The 3200's are great. A well made scope and definitely not so expensive that you would cry if you banged it up.

For best price, if you want that tacticool look and still have something that will handle the recoil, the Bushnell Elite 3200 tactical model is your best bet.

i took a look through a Millett BuckGold yesterday just out of curiosity and despite being made in china, the optics and controls were surprisingly good. around 350 though, so maybe not quite as cheap-n-throwaway as you want, but hit up a LeBaron and check them out. Millett has other models too that you might actually like.

for cheap-n-cheerful, maybe bushnell trophy which evidently are made in korea (read the markings on the scope when you handle it) and you get "tactical" flip-up covers too. optics are decent, though definitely not leupold / redfield / 6500 class. but neither is the price.

If your looking for a decent price & quality (for the cost) 1-4 look at the Hi-Lux CMR.

budget info would be helpful, but in the 500 dollar range you have lots of options. Nikon, bushnell, and vortex have the best glass in that price range in my opinion. Millet is not bad but I only have experience with the 1-4 spr(?). Like Grizzley said, find something that has some quality to it, lots of people here say buy once, cheap out and it is just an exercise in frustration. I have a cheapo NC star and hate it, it has lost zero on an AR. Don't know if it is just the one I have but I won't buy them again.
