THXS FOR THE HELP

I have three weavers. 6-24 and 4-16 and 36 power fixed. I also have had a 6.5-20 Leupold with a varmint reticle. I liked the Leupold but the weavers are more in your price bracket. You can get them with different reticles, mildot, target dot and fine crosshairs. The weavers are 1" tubes the leupold is 30 mm. The weavers are a good scope for the money. Hope this helps.

One of our site sponsors (CyberK) operates a business called Allen Gunworks. They sell a line of scopes, "Falcon" (and Merlin) that are very well priced and are good quality. They are a tactical style of scope.

I suggest you ask people on this board what they think of dealing with CyberK and the quality of his excellent scopes. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

I know your budget is what you've posted but from my experience with cheaper scopes is that you're never happy with what you've bought and you always want something more that actually fits the build. Our line of NIghtforce is about three time more expensive then you're wanting to spend but you don't buy a scope everyday. Also, with the right setup, you'll be able to move the scope from gun to gun easily and end up with one awesome scope for everything with a reticle that speaks the same language as your turrets. We also offer the support for customers just like yourself that don't know all that much about what Nightforce is all about and why it's leaps and bounds better then most scopes on the market. You'll start actually testing how good your guns are with your new Nightforce scope. Best of all, you'll only pay 5% GST on your purchase if you live outside of Alberta.

Cheers,

T

I have also heard and read a few reviews on the Falcon scopes. Apparently they are very good for the money. Alot of people will try to tell you to buy the best scopes on the market, and while they are definately very nice (I own two Nightforce myself in fact) they aren't always within the budget of most people. If you can afford them great good for you, if not don't sweat it there are other scopes that will do it. Don't break the bank on a scope just because someone else told you you need it to shoot long range. That's a bunch of b&#!^%#t.

Here is a link for some scope reviews including the falcons just remove the space when you paste into your address bar: http://w ww.snipercentral.com/scopereviews.htm

-Super Sniper scopes seem to be getting alot of really good reviews with long distance shooters (They only offer fixed power scopes).
-Take a look at the high end bushnells (including the new 6500 series which is getting good reviews) with mildot reticles.
-The Falcons are getting great reviews for the money.
-As much as I hate to say it apparently the new Sightron line is doing alright (I had bad experiences with them before but I'm only writing what I have heard).

So I guess to sum up, get the best scope you can but don't go and re-mortgage the house or take out a loan to do it. Shop within your budget.

-John

P.S If your shooting to 1000 make sure the scope has plenty of adjustment range (I'd try for at least 80 MOA adjustment).

Buy a good quailty scope if you are serious about getting into this if not then follow your budget . Leupold is another option to the Nightforce line of scopes and is less expensive than NF

I'll third buying a good quality scope. Its something you'll have for a long time. There is no comparison between good quality glass, repeatability, and construction of a higher end scope.

I will fourth it!

I have owned my share of cheaper scopes, all are good for 100 yard shooting, and acceptable for 300 yard shots if the conditions are good. Beyond this I have never found a cheaper scope to be adequate under all conditions...

It costs $$ to grind and coat quality optics, and then mount them in a durable tube with accurate, and resiliant adjustments.

Magnification without equivalent resolution will not leave you happy.

Hmm, I'm a newbie to scopes, and I'd like one for long distance target work; in the 1000yd range. I've been leaning toward the Bushnell 4200 6-24x50 for my first scope, but the Falcon Menace 4.5-18x56mm got good reviews; thanks Johnny5 for that link.
Has anyone any comments on either of these scopes that would help me make up my mind? Obviously the price difference matters, but I've learned that it's usually better to buy quality right up front. Is the Falcon as durable and of the same quailty as the Bushnell?
(Btw, I also wear glasses- don't know if that's relevant or not.)

metoe,
If I was looking to get started with your budget , I would be looking for a used VarixIII 6.5x20 Leupold with target turrets. Together with Burris posi-aling rings it will make a great scope to start with. When you reach the point where you want to put all your shooting $ in the long range game you will have good trading stock to upgrade to a trendy NF or Mk4 , or an excellent scope for your favorite varmint rifle. :sniper:

i have the falcon 4-14X44FFP on my 300 WM and find it as alot more sturdy built then the bushnell and has better knobs to work with

Burris is another option.
Good glass, well made. The ballistic plex reticle is also pretty decent, if you want something other than fine plex or mil dots.

These scopes would probably fit into your budget. I'd try and opt for the Black diamond ones. Always get the best you can afford.

That being said, if you can go up to Leupold, or Nightforce you'll be better off in the long run.

I'd avoid the Bushnell. The 3200 is mediocre at best. The 4200 was decent, but it's not any super bargain at it's current price point. It's better just to save a bit longer and skip these.

I'm interested in the Falcon scopes as well, rather than the Bushnell.
