what scope to put on a sps tactical remi 700 20"

Why would a 24x be overkill? Target or hunting? Magnification is a personal preference. I like lots of magnification so I run 24x if not more.

a mix of both ... not much hunting.. more time is spent at the range.. i was wondering more about size proportion on itwith the short barrel lookwise

I use sightron 10-50x60 s3's on my guns. I have one gun with a 3-9 power scope.

Go for a 4-16x

Everyone has there own opinion but a number of people say 24x is too much, I'll track down the terminology but basically for ranges that you'll be shooting a 308 it's too close and causes distortion or some ####. Others will say 50x is good to go.
I found a 6-24 looked dumb on a 20" which was what pushed me towards the 16x (along with the feedback from competition shooters about ir)

For bench rest shooting, I like big pictures so magnification can be 24 or more even better. Personally I use a lot of 8X32X56 for 50 up to 200 yards. I like Sightron too.
