what scope????

Like everything else, how important is it to you?
I've used the cheap Tasco/Bushnells for years, no issues. BUT, I don't hunt with my .22's nearly as much as I did 20 years ago (shame, really).
All my bigger guns wear higher end glass.

I often face the same dilemma. The bushnell 3-9x32 rimfire is an ok scope for $60 but the resolution is still not that great. Sometimes the 32mm objective is just right and with a higher quality larger objective AO scope I'd have to use higher mounts and go to a chin hold as opposed to a cheek hold or knock off the rear sight. I've thought of a Leupold VX-II 3-9x33mm Rimfire but they're horribly pricey at around $400. It'd be nice if they made something with a 32mm between the cost of the Bushnell 3-9x32 and the Leupold 3-9x33. Maybe a Mueller Multi-Shot 2-7×32mm? I think they're around $200. I don't know. Does anyone have one of these?

I have the Bushnell rimfire scope and the simmons 22 mag scope. Both are nice. I think I use the simmons more though. It is on my cz452 - set up for grouse. Perfect setup on 3 power :)

I wonder what the Weaver Rimfire Scope 2.5–7x 28 is like? They're around $200

That may be a good choice. I've always used reg rifle scopes on 22s.
With the limited range of the 22s, I believe 7x is the max power you can use while 2x is the best choice for huntability.

Well I think that the Bushnell will be the one I get.
I just wont it for target shooting.
I have a 3x20 Tasco scope on it now but would like to get something better.

Untill I upgrade the gun the scope can not be worth more that the gun.

Lakefield mark 2

I have a Weaver Classic Rimfire straight 4X on my 10/22. These seem like good scopes for the money, not quite as expensive as a better quality "big game" rifle scope... clear and bright but made for rimfire distances.

What about a Bushnell Elite? They can be had new for about $180 on the EE and on ebay. I would check that out first unless thats just too big for a rimfire

I've used 9X for off-hand field shooting with no major problem. I've shot at 16X off the bench. I guess it all depends on rifle, shooter, and scope.

Personally, I'd go for the best glass that I could afford. I look for something in the 40mm range that lets in a lot of light- The Banner dusk/dawn by Bushnell is pretty good in this respect. I find I get most of my game shooting near first, and last light of the day. Adjustable objective is desirable in a scope for the .22, especially for upper magnifications- if you can't find one factory parallax corrected for 50 yds...

I just purchased a Weaver Classic 3x9x32mmAO scope for $250. Great little scope, very nice optics, bright and clear and very nice (fine) crosshairs. I think this scope is an excellent alternative to the expensive Leupold 3x9AO.

Merry Christmas

As Doc Sharptail already said, it depends what you are doing with your 22 rimfire. For informal plinking and a few groups not fired in competition, anything will do from 4x up, as long as you do not have to deal with a lot of parallax at shorter distances. For serious target shooting, you need good resolution and an adjustable objective. My serious target 22's wear nothing less than a 12X AO Leupold, and more power works even better. At 100 meter benchrest, one of my 6.5-20 AO Leupys will be mounted, for sure. I have a 2-7X Rimfire Leupy on one of my 581's and it is a great glass for all but the most serious shooting. I have owned exactly 3 scopes so far: A $15 Bushnell 4x for my air rifle a long time ago, the Bushnell 3-9x 32 .22 Rimfire scope and the Simmons 3-9x 40 scope that came with the Savage 111fcxp3 package. The Bushnell feels very solid and seems to give me no problems other than being a little blurry in the highest magnification so I back it down a bit. The rings it comes with are much stronger than on the Simmons, but for a $40 scope, what's to be expected? :p I guess one of these days I'll have the priviledge of looking through some glass that costs more than $60 :D.

Bottom line? I've had lots of trouble-free fun with the Bushnell, but I'm 100% certain theres better stuff to be had.

And for those wanting an exact review of just how bad that Simmons scope is, it's not as clear as the Bushnell Rimfire, and the rings came loose off the gun after firing 60 .30-06 rounds through it. The design of the rings resemble those that came with the $15 4x15 air rifle scope, so FLIMSY.

Both my .22lr's wear 3-12x44 Side Focus Illum. Mildot scopes with target turrets and flip up lens covers. The scopes are 30mm tubes, focus down to 10 yards and work excellent. Total cost per scope was 58.80 CAN including tax and shipping. Futong was doing a 50% off sale so I took advantage. The sight picture and clarity kicks the snot out of the cheap Bushnell rimfire scopes...

GeoTrekr,
Unless you suddenly have a lot of extra money around, don't look through the higher end scopes :p

Do like DAR701 did. I prefer the 4x-16x 52mm for $65 (I bought 2) or if you want a more conventional scope the 4x-16x 44mm with Ao instead of side focus is a good deal at $100, but at 50 bux it's steal!

And if you really want to see what your Lakefield will do, think about the 8x-32x 50 AO. Mine was a tiny bit inconsistant becasue there was some play in the focusing of the eyepiece, a tiny dab of RTV Blue fixed that. And for 116.50 what else would you compare it to? For $59 you really can't go wrong!

And before you start thinking that the scope might not stand-up to anything, my 8x-32x has sat on my M14 for a couple hundred rounds, then to an '06 bolt-gun and to a 7mm RemMag each for about 100 rounds, and it's still perfect, except the batteries in the illuminated reticle go dead in about 6 months. So I just take the battery out.
